Stamp of the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Library (deaccessioned) and two library shelfmarks pasted in “Q83” and “K30.” Contemporary limp vellum; (lightly soiled with some dampstains, backstrip partly perished with partial ms. title and light edgewear; lower outer corner of l5 and D2 torn affecting a few words, but in remarkable shape given its extensive use; cloth folding case). SOLD WITH two letters, handwritten, illustrated, and signed by Fabres, to a female companion, Antoinette ("Mi muy querida y siempre recordada amiga"). Both are mostly in French, with just a little Spanish, both list an address of 715 Madison Avenue in New York, and both are absolutely charming. Spine and edges of boards a bit sunned; some faint foxing along fore-edge, but internally bright and clean. A nice copy, from the library of Ernest Hemingway's younger sister, with her pencilled ownership signature on the FFEP ("Ursula Heminway Jepson") and her bookplate on front paste-down ("Jasper and Ursula Jepson").

Joints and corners a little scuffed; top corners lightly bumped; closed tear on rear free-endpaper. Contents are bright and fresh.

Text block detached from spine; contents very good or better. Written at about the same period as "Tropic of Cancer," and concerned with much of the same material -- sex, bohemian life, and the beauty of Paris -- all nicely captured by Brassai. Photographs printed in gravure.

New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1938. Fine. Very scarce leaflet from the MOMA in March of 1938 advertising this exhibition. A single sheet folded, with the catalog of the exhibition printed on the back and text from Hemingway along with a reproduction of one of the drawings in the inner folded section. Extremely nice example, apparently a printer's copy.

Antwerp: Prostant apud Philippu Lisaert, auctoris aere & curae, 1612. 4to (240 x 192mm). 212pp., [2]. 103 full-page engravings attributed to his brother and artist Gijsbert van Veen (1562-1628). Title with engraved oval portrait of Horace. Contemporary vellum, paneled in blind with raised bands; (title thumb-soiled, worming to lower margins worst at final few quires; modern endpapers, hinges strengthened, upper joint cracked at head and foot, covers slightly bowed). Otto Vaenius was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist flourishing in Brussels in the late 16th and early 17th century. He is known for running a large studio in Antwerp, producing several emblem books, and for being Peter Paul Rubens’s teacher from 1594 to 1598. Horatian emblem books were received with resounding enthusiasm in the early modern period.
