James Hurd Keeling (1832 - 1909) was born in Malta, the son of the Rev John Keeling, a well-known Wesleyan minister. On the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854 he went out as Surgeon to the second regiment of the Turkish contingent. In 1860 he became Lecturer on Medical Jurisprudence at the Sheffield Medical School, beginning a teaching career that would last nearly forty years.

319pp. Colour frontispiece by Cyrus Cuneo. Some rubbing to spine, with early splitting to cloth covering at edge, and missing front endpaper, with weakening of front and rear joints. An African adventure based on Biblical royalty, previously serialised in Nash's Magazine. Haggard originally wanted to use the title Maqueda, but was persuaded to adopt this title by Eveleigh Nash. 7600 domestic copies were printed on the 10 September 1910 with the Nash imprint, two days after the U. S. edition.

Very Good, clean, tight condition, in edge-worn dustwrapper with repair to rear of lower spine. Unobtrusive inkstamp initials 'HCR' to lower corner of rear endpaper (?bookseller?). History and excavation of the Tudor royal palace, built by King Henry VIII in Cuddington, Surrey.

1st Collectors Edition / 1st printing, with complete numberline 1-10 to copyright page. Includes a new afterword by the author. (Originally published by Canongate in 1989). Very Good condition, with just a touch of shelf wear to the lower edges and minor dusting to closed upper page edges. Appears unread. In Very Good original dustwrapper which is not price-clipped. Handsigned by the author to the reverse of the front endpaper. No personalisation or other inscriptions.
