Full calf, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet around covers with gilt fleurons in corners (18th-century binding, corners dulled). 1). Second edition, largely original, of this "pure masterpiece of the Lyon school" (as stated by Brun) of Renaissance illustrated books, of which the printer Jean de Tournes and the painter-draftsman Bernard Salomon were the most famous protagonists. Adorned with a title set in a fine frame of engraved arabesques, and two hundred and thirty-one woodcuts after drawings by Bernard Salomon, this edition contains thirty-three more engravings than the first of 1533. 2). Original edition illustrated with ninety-six woodcuts after Bernard Salomon.
