London: Printed for Baldwin, Cradock and Joy...and N. Hailes, 1821. [2], 159pp, [1]. With an engraved frontispiece. Original publisher's gilt-ruled green roan-backed blue paper boards, printed paper lettering-piece. Extremities worn, loss to lettering-piece and head of spine. Lightly foxed. An unsophisticated copy of the first edition of childrenâs writer Jeffreys Taylorâs (1792-1853) conduct of life tale in which the eponymous proto-Scrooge, having happened across a concealed gold coin whilst walking one night, is driven to distraction by the possibility of yet more hidden wealth. The miser is further encouraged by the sudden appearance of a ghostly apparition who, in portentous tones, appears to confirm his suspicions that a great treasure is within reach. Richards, with some misadventure, soon locates a buried vault brimming with riches and, somewhat unusually for a childrenâs tale, is able to purloin each and every valuable item without…

Hull: Printed By George Prince, in Scale-Lane, and sold at the New Chapel, City-Road, London, [c.1790]. 223pp, [1]. Uncut, in early roughly-sewn wrappers over original blue-paper wraps. Loss to over-wraps, some rounding to edges and occasional soiling of text block. John William Fletcher (bap. 1729, d.1785), Anglican clergyman and Methodist writer. Fletcher and his wife, Mary Bosanquet Fletcher, were friends of John and Charles Wesley. One of the earliest theologians of the Methodist movement, he was chosen by John Wesley to be successor, had he not predeceased the latter. A Rational Vindication, a defence of traditional Trinitian orthodoxy, was published posthumously after completion by Joseph Benson. Imprints exist at both London and Hull; both are rare. ESTC records only three locations holding this provincial printing in the UK (Birmingham, BL, Dr. William's Library) and four in North America (Perkins School of Theology, Texas, Union Theological Seminary and Washington & Lee University).…

Description:
[London?]: [s.n.], [1740?] Single bifolium. 3pp, [1]. Docket title to verso of second leaf. A trifle creased. An early example of commercial Parliamentary lobbying literature, published in small numbers for distribution to Members of Parliament in order to influence opinion in the run up to debates and divisions, highlighting, in eleven clear points, the commercial situation for the wool trade in Worcester, lamenting the failures of the Worcester Clothiers Company, then appealing to Parliament for financial assistance. It is made clear that rival clothiers in Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Wiltshire have remained profitable and sought to export their wares abroad, particularly to Turkey, at which the Worcester trade has failed. ESTC records a single copy in North America (Harvard), and none elsewhere. ESTC N63563..

Huddersfield: Printed for the author, by J. Lancashire, 1824. 242pp. With an engraved frontispiece, an engraved vignette depicting a beehive to title page, and a list of subscribers. Uncut in original publisher's drab paper boards. Lightly rubbed and marked, corners bumped. Lightly dampstaining to head of title and initial two leaves of text, else internally clean and crisp. The sole edition, in original state, of the only published work of native of Saddleworth, Yorkshire, and apiarian Thomas Shaw (1756-1828). The compositions are predominantly pastoral and sentimental - with the exception of two inspired by the Battle of Waterloo - and include, appropriately 'A Poem on Bees', a lengthy impassioned paean in rhyming couplets extolling the virtues of the bumbling insects and the wonders of the hive, commencing with the Homeric lines: 'Ye Muses nine inspire my lays; Of Amazons be mine the praise: Sing of a Queen of beauteous form, And of her race that boundless swarm'. The first edition in French of this milestone in the study of the digestive processes of man and animals, originally published in Germany as Die Verdauug nach Versuchen (1826). The authors, Friedrich Tiedeman (1781-1861) and Leopold Gmelin (1748-1804), expand their earlier work on the subject into a comprehensive and highly influential study, employing chemical operations and microscopic experimentation to determine the significance of organs and bodily fluids in the digestive process. Kenneth Tynan (1927-1980) was an influential - and groundbreaking - English theatre critic and writer, who rose to prominence during the 'Angry Young Man' movement that promoted theatrical realism. Despite being critical of Olivier's tenure at Chichester Festival Theatre, Tynan nonetheless recommended himself as Literary Director of the National Theatre. Olivier's wife, Joan, had to convince her husband to accept - a decision that would cement both his and Tynan's reputations internationally. This is the first edition of the companion volume to one of Tynan's National productions that starred Olivier, which Tynan explains in…
