LONDON : George G Harrap & Co Ltd, 1919 A very good copy of the first trade edition with Harry Clarke's famous illustrations. This was Clarke's second published work and initially contained black and white plates. It was reprinted 4 years later with the addition of colour plates. Clarke's style beautifully complements Poe's writing. With 24 black and white full page plates (including the frontispiece) and numerous designs (a particularly spooky example at the end of the book). The binding has been expertly repaired and rebacked, providing new matching cloth on the back board, and is very clean and sound, with black titles and decoration to the front board and spine. The spine is slightly browned and there is light surface scuffing. New endpapers have been added. The contents are very bright and clean. There are old printing marks to the back of the plate at p 85 and light spotting to p 96. London: Duckworth & Co., 1914 A good copy in the original blue decorative cloth binding with 16 plates by Milo Winter. The blue cloth binding has a black design and gilt titles to the front board and a gilt and black design with gilt titles to the spine. Both are bright but with some wear. The spine is pulled at the top and bottom with wear to edges. The boards have wear to corners. Contents include decorative endpapers, frontispiece, title page and text with 15 further plates. 4 of the plates appear to have been detached at one time and tipped-in later - they have a little more wear/browning to edges. Contents generally clean with the odd light mark. There is an inscription dated Xmas 1914 to the verso of the fep.

London, Calcutta and Sydney: George G Harrap & Co Ltd A very good to near fine copy in original decorative full leather binding with 12 colour plates, 10 greyscale plates and numerous full page and in text illustrations. Undated but circa 1915. The binding has an elaborate design to the front board and spine. It is very clean. There is a slight warp to the top of the boards, slight darkening to the spine and slight wear at the top front spine joint. Top page edges gilt; remainder untrimmed. Internally the original lightly-marbled endpapers are present with a decorative bookplate to the front pastedown. The contents are in lovely clean condition with the very occasional slight mark. The stitching is slightly loose in a couple of places but the book is sound.

VG copy in original hardback binding. Binding with some bumping to top corners but otherwise very clean and bright. Contents VG to near fine.

LONDON : John van Voorst, 1856 A classic work on the natural history of the sea shore. It gives a detailed record of a summer holiday that Gosse spent in Tenby studying the shoreline and the wide variety of species that he found. it has 24 partly coloured plates of sea creatures - some microscopic. It is in the original green decorative cloth binding which has had a cloth case repair. It has a new green cloth spine to match with leather label and gilt titles. The contents are tight and in generally good condition with some brown spotting. A previous owner has written the magnification (x110) in ink at the bottom of one of the plates.

London: Herbert Jenkins Limited, 1934 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth with new leather spine with red title and publisher labels. The boards are slightly darkened with red titles to front board and publisher's emblem to back board. The boards have been professionally repaired to straighten and reinforce the corners so the binding is sound and tight. New endpapers. Internally there is some browning to the half title page and light spotting which stops at p8. Contents otherwise generally clean and sound with the occasional light spot or mark. 8 page publisher's catalogue at the rear.

Albany: Weed, Parsons & Company, public printers, 1850 An interesting copy of the Revised Edition, in half leather binding by George Zabriskie, and with his inscription internally. George Albert Zabriskie (1868-1954) was a very keen collector of books and art, and took this interest further into 'finishing' book bindings - many completed as gifts. This volume has an inscription at the first initial blank: 'To Edward with the best wishes of his old brother "the finisher" George June 3/51'. The binding is in morocco leather with gilt compartments to the spine - one of which has the volume title. The remainder have a Native American head; hunting equipment; a deer head; a bird; and a horse head in gilt. There is a gilt cat head and a mouse on the leather at the front board. Edinburgh: Printed by Neill & Co, not printed for sale, 1831 An extremely scarce original copy in contemporary full leather binding. According to the 'Preliminary Statement' in the book, it arose from a meeting in April 1831, where a 'few young gentlemen, natives of Orkney', agreed that while there was a lot of interest and value attached to antiquities in Orkney and Zetland, very little was published or known. The book proposed setting up a Society - possibly called 'The Orkney and Zetland Statistical Society'. The rest of work pulls together extracts from other works, lists prominent individuals, and gives a listing of works on Orkney and Zetland at that period. This copy has been repaired to provide a new leather spine with gilt titles. The contemporary boards have a delicate blind stamped leaf design to the borders. In contemporary panelled calf binding which has been expertly rebacked with new spine with gilt lined raised bands and title label. Corners have been repaired. The binding is in very good clean condition. Contents are complete with large folding map and 30 plates, of which 8 are folding. Paris: G Charpentier et Cie, 1888 En tres bon etat. VG copy in contemporary full leather binding from the Petite Bibliotheque Charpentier. The binding has raised bands to spine, gilt titles and gilt decoration to inner board edges. Aeg. Marbled endpapers. Original page marker present. With 2 full page illustrations by Uberti. The binding has very slight sunning to the spine and very light scuffing to boards. A lovely copy.

Edinburgh, London: A Constable and Company, and John Murray, 1806 A very good copy of Patrick Neill's description of his tour in Orkney and Shetland in probably contemporary half leather binding. Patrick Neill (1776-1851) was a printer who became particularly known for his 'interests' in botany and horticulture. He was a founding Member and first Secretary of the Wernerian Natural History Society. He visited Orkney and Shetland in 1804/5 and his account was initially published in parts through The Scots Magazine. He was appalled by the miserable conditions experienced by ordinary people on the islands and he started a lively debate on the issue. In the preface of the whole work, published 1806, he states 'it was almost impossible not to take some notice of the state of the inhabitants of the islands. Robertson was briefly imprisoned for his remarks and the revised edition, issued later in 1794, lacks pp 233-35 which were considered particularly seditious. In contemporary half leather binding with gilt decorative compartments to spine and marbled boards. With armorial bookplate of the Kinnaird family (? Charles, 8th Lord, 1780-1826) to the front pastedown. The binding appears to be the original publisher's boards with a more elaborate spine and is rubbed with some splitting observable at the top of the front joint and bumping to corners. Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. Paris, Rue S Jacques: Chez la Delaguette; Chez le Prieur, 1750 Second revised and enlarged edition of this popular work on the cultivation of peach trees. First published in 1745. Earliest French book entirely about the cultivation and management of peaches. In contemporary full leather binding with title label, raised bands and gilt compartments to spine. The binding is sound with some wear. Internally there is a small label pasted to the front pastedown and eividence of some writing on the fep. The contents otherwise are in VG and clean condition. 198 pages plus notes on 'Privil du Roi' at the rear.

London : Printed by J.Nichols for T. Cadell, 1784 A fair copy of the 1st edition in 2 volumes in contemporary full leather binding. William Coxe travelled extensively throughout Europe in his role as a tutor and companion. His account is detailed and comprehensive. This copy is in contemporary full calf with title and volume labels to spine and elaborate gilt compartments. The boards have gilt ruled lines to edges. The binding has very weak spine joints with splitting to all. The spine to Vol II has a vertical crease. The boards are still attached, but repair is needed. The boards are very clean with only minor scuffing. Corners are rubbed with light leather loss. London: T Cadell, 1789 A fair copy of the 1st edition in 3 volumes. Classed as 'fair' because the contemporary full calf bindings are very worn, and because the map of Switzerland from Vol I is absent. William Coxe was a historian and priest who travelled widely - mainly as a tutor and companion to the wealthy. He was a keen observer who wrote and later published detailed accounts of his travels. In Travels in Switzerland he provides both detail on scenery, flora and fauna, and on history and social issues. This copy is in contemporary calf. Vol II has a replacement plain spine of the 'do it yourself' variety; Vols I looks to have a newer spine aged to match the original; Vol III has the original spine with title labels and gilt compartments.
