Description:
A personal scrapbook of an Italian-American fellow recruited to serve in the Navy in late 1953. The album documents, through pasted-in documents, photographs and ephemera, the early part of the maritime service of Rocco "Rocky" Ernest Pignoli (1934-2022). 14 leaves/28 pages; inside rear cover also utilized. Light chipping and a few minor closed tears; overall terrific condition, lace binding intact, covers in fine if worn condition with one small area of separation at the binding (lower front cover). Covers 12 1/2" w X 14 1/2 h. The first page has a charming painting of a little boy, in sailor's outfit, holding up a ship in a bottle. On each side, a long list of islands and ports-of-call around the Caribbean and the Pacific, including dates when the Equator and the International Date Line were crossed; this list was likely filled in towards the end of this sailor's service. Most of the album details the earlier part of Pignoli's military career, including call-up letters from late 1953 and orders to… Read More

Description:
Early 1900s photo album measuring 5.75" x 7.5," with 50 leaves/100 pages, about 45 photos in total, black paper, latter half of the album is blank. Cover well-worn but intact with edge wear; no pages torn or photos missing. The eighth page of this album has a postcard pasted in, of the Collegiate Sorosis Society, at 1501 Washtenaw Avenue (according to one website) in Ann Arbor. This was an early "secret society" on campus. The Fraternity History website franbecque.com has a page about this Society and its unique features; it was one of the first and most historically important of the sororities, which were in turn integral to the nascent women's equality movement. The album itself depicts facets of college life among the sisters of the sorority. Lovingly assembled, the first item pasted in is a card that reads "With Best Wishes for a Happy Journey" - cryptically, both the 'To' and the 'From' corners are illustrated with a photograph, rather than a name! From a certain young man to a certain young… Read More

Description:
There are fifty-three original photographs of people, places and things in Thailand, sent as Real Photo Postcards with typewritten notes on the back in this captivating collection made by Harry Everett Lyndes, Jr., during his time stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. The photos, most measuring 5" x 7" and some 5" x 8", were taken and captions written by one airforce squadron commander (and later "C of M") A.Y.H. (Harry) stationed at NKP (Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Navy Base, formerly Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base), and later Korat and Chiang Mai, and sent back home to his wife and two kids, the Lyndeses, in Orono, Maine, mostly between early October 1970 and March 1971 (some are addressed to his own mother and his wife when they visit her in California, and one hand-written postcard appears to be dated March 1970). From his accounts it appears A.Y.H. spent his time there awaiting assignment as squadron commander at NKP and later transitioning to "C of M" - something maintenance… Read More

Description:
A 4.25" x 6.25" loose leaf notebook with about 60 pages of a diary, filled with entries in both pencil and typewritten. The diary was kept by an unidentified man in the US Coastguard, who mostly works in the Radio Lab in New London, CT. It dates from 1933-1937, though most of it is from 1934. He will miss some time, then catch up with what was happening in his life. He has a great sense of humor. He drinks, dates, works, drinks more beer and then some milk. In the front of the diary are four typewritten pages going over the last few years of his life. They read: Saturday, September 1, 1934. USCG Academy, New London, CT: Well again I've decided to keep a diary, a might risky thing to do says my friend Catlin, but then I told him I was going to be careful and not get too confidential with it. It is my intention that this will be my last years in the service and I thought perhaps it would be nice to have a few reminders in the years to come, of these last few years in the US Coast Guard. I find now… Read More

Description:
5.75" x 8" leather bound photo album with sixty-five photos and a couple of postcards from the US Coast Guard Iceberg Patrol Ship the USS Mendota from around 1930. There are ten snapshots of sailors with icebergs and other fantastic shots of the interior and exterior of the ship, along with lots of sailors. One photo has an explanation of the iceberg cutting ships which says that after the sinking of the Titanic, the US Coast Guard has carried out an ice patrol about the grand banks during the berg season to prevent the repetition of such a disaster. Photos are held to the page with corner tabs and it looks like two photos are missing. The edges of the album pages are brittle and the leather covers are deteriorating. There are wonderful photos in this album, taken by someone with a great eye.

Description:
This album contains photos and ephemera tracking Bernard D. Sawicki's time as a student in the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland from 1949 to 1950. On the inside of the front cover is a "Welcome to Annapolis, Maryland" postcard and empty corner tabs. The album contains over 200 black and white photos of the U.S. Naval Academy campus, drill practice, Sawicki and friends in uniform, and naval ships. However, among these there are some charming pictures of Sawicki and friends in their bunks, shaving, playing sports, and clearly enjoying the free time that they have from training. There are also photographs of friends and family, and a couple of photographs of girls, including a large color portrait of Audrey Accurso. There is a large class photo from the Naval Academy as well, with the names of each individual written on the back. A decent portion of the photos have handwritten comments and the date written on the back. Photographs measure between 2.25 x 2.5" and 10 x 8" and are held to the page… Read More
