The second located copy of a nineteenth-century broadside featuring poet Thomas Campbell's (1777-1844) popular nautical ballad 'Ye Mariners of England', celebrating the strength of the Royal Navy: 'The spirit of your fathers Shall start from every wave; For the deck it was their field of same, And ocean was their grave. Where Blake and mighty Nelson fell, Your manly hearts shall glow, As ye sweep through the deep, While the stormy tempests blow; While the battle rages loud and long, And the stormy tempests blow.' The verse was first composed in 1800 and first printed in the Morning Chronicle in January, 1801; the reference to the death of Nelson being a later insertion. A rare survival, in unsophisticated state, of the third printing of James Pedder's (1775-1859) conduct of life tale for children.
