Letterforms for Signage

[TYPOGRAPHY.] Collection of 5 lithograph and 20 steel engraved plates on typography for sign-making, from the Journal 'Journal de Peintres en batiment et decors'. Paris, ca 1830.

Tall 8vo (234 x 150mm), ll. 20, of which 20 steel engravings and 5 lithograph plates; contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards.

A fascinating private collection of plates illustrating various aspects of sign-making, all collected from the Journal des Peintres en bâtiment et en décors, from the 1830s. The use of painted letters for signs became very popular in the1830s, echoing a strong demand from shopkeepers. Everyone wanted their name written in red or gold letters on their shop front, which was criticised by sign historians at the end of the 19th century as a laughable sign of contemporary narcissism. The Journal des Peintres en bâtiment et en décors presents models of "fashionable" alphabets, gives ratios for scaling up, instruction in perspective drawing and suggestions on how to represent shadows for three dimensional effects.

With the increasing popularity of advertising, the nineteenth century saw the development of bold lettering and the arrival of types of letterform that were not simply larger versions of body text faces. Amongst them sans-serif, slab-serif and new styles of bold blackletter, but also letters that emboldened or decorated the roman type form. These were known as 'fat faces', these showed magnified contrast, keeping the thin parts of the letter slender while magnifying the vertical strokes massively. Others copied stonecutters lettering or added other three dimensional effects.

see Anne-Sophie Aguilar et Éléonore Challine, Enseignes réelles, enseignes rêvées, Discours et réalités de l'enseigne commerciale au XIXe siècle.

Description:
Strasbourg : D'Emil Simon Fils , 1834. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding of brown marbled paper boards with an all-over green design. There is a large printed paper label with the title inset in an elaborately lithographed Gothic style frame. Tan paper covered spine of dark green cloth. The edges of the covers have a little wear. Inside there is an elaborately detailed title-page followed by 32 of 40 numbered plates. No evidence of plates being removed, as binding still very tight, but normally with 40 plates. All plates are black & white lithographs showing an amazing variety of typefaces and alphabets. Many are composed out of very imaginatively worked animals, plants, people or inventions forming the letters. A classic of this genre, here an incomplete copy with various faults, such as browning, tiny foxing, and 2 instances of later careful coloring of initials on different plates. Quite rare in the original binding. Large oblong folio, 11" high X 13 1/2"… Read More

Description:
London: Unit Editions, 2021. 1st ed. Paperback. New/no dj as issued. A long overdue book examining the extraordinary life and work of artist/designer Ed Fella. Ed Fella is revered by many of the leading names in contemporary design. Now, at long last, there is a book that charts Ed's journey from the commercial design studios of 1950s Detroit to his current position as a widely celebrated artist/designer. Ed Fella: A Life in Images makes extensive use of his vast treasure store of visual delight: it showcases flyers, posters, original sketches, drawings, Polaroids and collages, as well as items from Ed's collection of vernacular design. The book makes unrestricted use of Ed's vast archive. David Cabianca, the book's co-author and its instigator, has surveyed the archive in depth. He writes: "Ed Fella's archive is legion. It branches into numerous streams while sustaining a robust trail of examples along the way. Fella's archive exhausts the possibilities one might find in graphic design. Ed Fella… Read More
