New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1964. Limited Edition / First Edition. Leather bound. Near fine. Deluxe limited edition of The Burden and the Glory by President John F. Kennedy, signed by First Lady Jackie Kennedy.. Octavo, xvii, [3], 293pp. Deluxe blue morocco binding, title in gilt on spine, presidential seal stamped in gilt on front cover. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Light wear to spine, as is typical with this binding. In publisher's marbled slipcase, felt lined interior, solid binding, rubbing to lower panel and tips. (Newcomb, 2) Signed on front flyleaf: "Jacqueline Kennedy." From a limited edition of 100 copies, printed the year following President Kennedy's death in Dallas, Texas. A handful of copies of the deluxe edition were personally inscribed and distributed by Jackie Kennedy, with others given to attendees at the first John F. Kennedy Presidential Library fundraiser in 1964. This book is from the private collection of Helen Keyes (1922-1992), longtime Kennedy family confidant and campaign assistant. Ms. Keyes served in the 1960 presidential campaign for John F. Kennedy, and as treasurer of the 1968 Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign. During the interim she worked for the Kennedy Library and taught a course at the John F. Kennedy School of Government in Boston. She remained close with Ted Kennedy until her death in 1992.
