New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Good+/None. 273pp; No DJ, Ex-Library (Private, only markings are rubber stamps to front endpaper & last test page, with DJ flaps glued to front endpaper), light dampstain to bottom of front board & spine, orange cloth boards with titling to front & spine, text unmarked, binding is tight, Good+ condition. Scarce, vintage account by a doctor who spent six years on the medical staff of large insane asylum in the southern United States. "Fascinating histories, horrible episodes and hilarious anecdotes run through the book." A New York Times review at the time notes, "There is much about insanity viewed from the medical angle in Dr. Small's book. One can learn here about schizoids, psychoneurotics, paranoiacs and all the other important classifications of lunatics... all of it written in a plain, non-technical style with histories of illustrative cases... Read Dr. Small's book is a good deal like hovering invisibly above and in and out of the home of his 3,000 and seeing and understanding both their outer and inner lives." The 1938 play "All the Living" was adapted from the book.
