Paris: Chez LePetit jeune, libraire, 1802. First edition. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt title and decoration on spine, marbled endpapers. A very good copy, rebacked with original backstrip laid down, edge wear, some leaves browned, occasional minor dampstain.. Engraved portrait frontis, xxiv, [25]-315 pp. (with half title). Sm. 8vo. Includes six items covering: Louisiana (and Canada), p. [25]-181; India (l'Indostan), p. [183]-228; Haiti (Saint-Domingue), p. [229]-239; Corsica (Corse), p. [241]-251; Guiana (Guyane), p. [253]-272; and "Lettre de M. le chevalier Turgot, a M. le duc de Choiseul. Paris, le 10 octobre 1765", p. [273]-300, with each section having separate half titles except for the last. Vergennes was a French diplomat serving as Foreign Minister from 1774 during the reign of Louis XVI, who helped to conclude a treaty with the American Colonies. The first section on Louisiana and Canada was probably written about 1777, published only after France had reclaimed Louisiana but shortly before its acquisition by the United States. Much interesting material on both New France and Louisiana. A few sources argue the work was not by Vergennes. Sabin 98971. Streeter III: 1573. Howes V74. Raines: 208. Brunet IV: 14019.

His history of Mexico is considered one of the best of the early histories of the subject. His history of Baja California is the first such, and contains passages relating to the foundation of the mission at San Francisco, as well as material on Kino and Salvatierra. Translated from the Italian manuscripts by Nicoles Garcia de San Vincente. The Palou volume is essential reading for the early history of Northern California. This is the second edition of the Vida of Serra. First published 1787. Francisco Palou (1723-1789) was a Franciscan missionary, administrator, and historian…

1867 Confederate 1ed John Morgan's Raid CIVIL WAR Basil Duke Gettysburg VicksburgJohn Hunt Morgan was a Confederate general in the American Civil War known mostly by his now famous Raid, an operation now known as 'Morgan's Raid'. Morgan sought to slow the Union growth in both Vicksburg and Gettysburg (both of which would become war-changing battles) by moving Confederate troops throughout the North hoping to draw Union armies toward the raiders and away from strongholds.
Morgan was shot and killed during his raid; however, one of Morgan's officers, Basil Duke, wrote a memoir on the life of General Morgan following the War – a work which provides incredible first-hand details on the raid and its influence on the Civil War.
According to Coleman,
"This work is the standard account of General John H. Morgan and his Confederate Cavalry. The author, Basil Duke, assumed command of Morgan's Cavalry after the death of General Morgan in 1864."
Krick supports this by saying that the work is
