About This Item

NY: Devin-Adair Company, 1961. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Third printing, 1963. Part of the American Naturalist Series. Signed on the title page in a blue pen, "Ade Murie," his nickname. Uncommon signed. A book that highlights the large mammals of Alaska, as Murie as a wildlife biologist for the National Park Service, which he worked for 32 years; there are chapters here on grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, arctic fox, caribou, wolverine, and Dall sheep. The book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1963. Adolph Murie was an activist against predator control and for wilderness protection, and along with his brother Olaus (the illustrator here) and Olaus's wife Margaret Murie was instrumental in the establishment of Teton National Park.

Gray cloth boards with wildlife illustrations in brown. With an ownership signature (Stu Motter) at the top of the front free endpaper. A near fine book on account of one small depression at the center of the front board; in a near fine jacket with mainly some rubbing to rear edge at flap.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
