In 1971 a group of Philippine lumbermen working on Mindanao Island discovered a hitherto unknown tribe of twenty-five forest dwellers. This chance meeting with the Tasaday (pictured on the front cover) was literally a confrontation with our past, and served to test our theories about what life must have been like in prehistoric times. The Tasaday. as living prehistory, are proof that the past can indeed illuminate the present.
