About This Item

London , 1816. Scarce satirical hand coloured etching. A close-up view of the Prince Regent standing with his back to the viewer. According to The British Museum, this is based on No. 9846 by Gillray, with The Regent's Bomb / Cadiz Memorial in the background. The image is mainly focussed on the George IV's large, rounded posterior! His curled and powdered wig, calves and arms are all also exaggerated. His garter is inscribed 'Honi soit' - this is an abbreviation of the Anglo-Norman phrase Honi soit qui mal y pense, or shame on he who thinks evil of it. This is the motto of the Order of the Garter. The engraving is clean and bright, with just residue of sticky tape to four corners of otherwise blank verso. Nice, Georgian humorous piece. 255 x 180 mm (10 x 7 inches).
