First English edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xii, 426; xii, 479pp., frontispiece, 58 plates, folding map (closed tears), numerous illustrations in text, original brown pictorial cloth gilt, light wear, some discolouration to lower board vol ii, a very good copy. Holub, an Austrian, arrived in South Africa in 1872 to seek his fortunes in the diamond fields. Holub gives accounts of pipe mining and their are illustrations of mine workings in Kimberley. On his first excursion into the interior, he travelled to the Transvaaal, taking note of the countryside and tribes. In November 1873, he started his second expedition through Bechuanaland towards the Zambesi. His third expedition in 1875 carried him to the rivers Chobe and Zambesi. One tangible result of his expeditions was the vast number of ethnographic and natural history objects which he brought back to Europe and distributed amongst various museums. First edition; 16mo (17.2 x 12.5 cm); 47pp., illustrated throughout; original illustrated wrappers, slightly soiled, bookshop stamps to lower wrapper, a very good copy. A study of Podillian folk art undertaken by the Podolia Expedition of the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum in Leningrad.

Large thick 8vo bound in full brown morocco, very worn and rubbed, very worn lettering piece to spine. Joints cracked but holding. Marbled endpapers with binder's tape to strengthen hinges. Binding is probably early 19th century and on the reverse of the front free endpaper is a name, "Wm. Snook 1860", eaerlier ownership inscriptions to rear page, dated 1772. Psalms, (bound to front) and Old Testament lack their individual engraved title pages with unusual heart shaped text area inside the illustrations. Title page to New Testament present as are the engraved genealogies. Engraved initial letters and head and tail-pieces. Pages browned and foxed with some early and faded ink marginalia. Generally a clean and sound early 17th century Bible and priced fairly to reflect condition.

1839 ANATOMY ATLAS 1ed Bourgery 90 HUGE Engravings Medicine Surgery Jacob Folio

Jean Baptiste Bourgery was an early 19th-century French anatomist known for his collaboration with anatomy illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob. The two worked together to publish one of the most extensive and elaborate anatomical atlases, 'Traité complet de l'anatomy de l'homme'. This enormous atlas was published in numerous volumes over a 40-year period, even after Bourgery's death.

This absolutely exquisite volume from the folio first edition was published in 1839 and contains 90 astonishing engravings depicting human organs, injuries, wounds, and more all with thorough descriptions.

Publisher’s greyish brown cloth; about fine. Tipped into this copy is a tipped-in inscription in Emerson’s hand, “T.G. Appleont, Esq. from the Author.” The receipient was likely Thomas Gold Appleton, a prominent Boston attorney and literary figure whose sister married Longfellow.
