SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the 1st leaf.FIRST PUBLISHED IN JANUARY 1942 "stated".Minor edgewear to bottom edge and 2 corners. Top spine area has a missing strip of cloth 1/16 across,minor wear to spine bottom. Signed on the 1st leaf with signature only,very nice and dark. book is very very tight and square,minor yellowing to the inside covers only and very minor soiling page ends. New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1927 1st ed/6th printing Dec 1927, long inscription on the first title page in author's handwriting and signed by Author and Biller Houser to a Helen Lord, in the inscription gives a hint to who these people were, they were fellow teachers at an all male prep school named The Lawerenceville School in NJ, were Mr Wilder taught FRENCH, and had close ties to Princeton. BOOK: is very clean and the sections(signatures) are still very well bound,but the webbing between them is showing at some places, still very secure and held together tightly,other than that appears to be better than the Good+ I rate it.. included is a 9th printing,with its dustjacket which has chips and darken spine,maybe use it to protect the good one.

True First Edition with 1934 on Main Title Page and on the copyright page with no other printings listed. No Markings, beautiful green stained top page ends, other page ends are a touch off(light age toning) inside covers front ok but back is showing some browning, not much. NO WEAR, Sharp Corners, unread tightness and very square, light bruising to spine ends, did I mention No Visible WEAR. BUT the brown cloth covers are cloudy (only way I know to describe it), it is not all the same shade, its 2 shades of brown and no distinct pattern like a cloud...DJ: is ligthly faded because red fades with tim, it is slightly soiled keeping it from being as bright as new, light rubbing and light edgewear, a very very small chip just above the W in Now not effecting the letters. True First Edition with 1934 on the Main Title Page and the copyright page with no other printings listed. And directly signed on the 1st leaf by the AUTHOR "Josephine W. Johnson September 1934" in black ink HER FULL Signature(as full as I've ever seen her signature) just 2 months after the publishing date...And there is a later issue Dustjacket too, with the fold-out flap. BOOK details first: Brown cloth covers with paper labels, the spine label is 95-97% gone but I have an answer for it at the end of the description, one on the front nice, light rubbing, light shelf wear, all corners touch of wear or rounding, the spine ends are worn to the point of fraying(but not bumped) and a very slight lean. Orange clothlike with black stamped lettering spine and front cover. Soiled lightly spine, couple of small stains front cover. The top is the only milled page ends, other 2 rough cuts.. stated first edition. signed Sidney Howard, April 1926 Main Title Page. Unread tightness, very square, only writing by the author, a nice copy for a collection. Slight lean. This is the only copy I found directly signed Pulitzer Prize Winner. Signature is highly collected anyway/anyhow.

All the markings of the 1st Edition, not sure if the binding is original seems simply made. Boards cut to protect the rough cut pages rectangle, 1 paper label is on the spine with Title and by Author. The corners are protected with metal protectors. The spine ends are weak and starting to fray, shows minor shelf wear. It is nice to see it in such great shape for 92 years old and with only 500 printed.

Cloth like spine and corner protectors, paper boards. This issue is 1928 (code is C-C, March 1928) but the copyright is/was 1922 and is part of her award winning poems. This copy is signed on 1st title page Signature only. One large defect is the large Previous Suite mates gift inscription(not the author) on the 1st leaf. The spine ends are bruised and the label has been roughed up a wee bit but fully there( a touch of glue would fix it). Minor soiling and minor shelf wear to the protectors. See photos. Her most read lines of poetry, just mention "Burning a candle at both ends" just about everybody in the world have heard them. Maybe a few primitives living on a forbidden island with no touch with mankind wanted. I look for a reference for a price and none were found and realizing then I have found a treasure. EXACT SAME AS THE 1ST EDITION 1934, brown cloth with labels on the Spine(dirty spine cloth and the label is dirty, too. It might clean up but why de-age it) and Front cover. A paper form clipped to the 1st leaf with form THE NEW YORK TIMES, BOOK REVIEW, When Received..AUG.20, Publisher's Price $2. and then instructions on how to write to the review standards. Their form F 361 5M 10-33 slip is aged with the top edge fading(wonderful) appearance. It has not had a dustcover due to the soiled spine(Maybe able to clean but why it is part of the aging process). I added facsimile dustjacket 2nd state no reviews, wonderful copy for this book. The clip is rusting leaving shadows on the inside cover and the slip(leave it to show age because the damage is done). The spine is soiled and weaken to the point just before fraying(very close or is fraying) another reason to add a dustjacket) The bottom spine end is worst than the top spine end(but it has fuzz). 1ST EDITION, 1ST STATE(John Day Publishing Company) and all 1st issue points. Top stain, flees, John Day last page, if there are any others I bet it is in here. The glassine Dustjacket came with it(Wraps as stated by Ahearn & Blanck). Unmarked, unread, clean, square. Check the photos. The rear spine cloth may seem slightly loose(appearance), that is it that I can see but listed as Near Fine?ADDED to this collection is the remaining books of the Trilogy(the Sons and A House Divided both are Great Copies themselves-search my books for the photos of them also) and the 4th book of the Saga(The Mother). The UK title is August 1914 is the exact same book, word for word, chapter by chapter. I have had this book in my private collection for over 20 years because it was a signed Pulitzer winner(I was always intending to replace it with the American Signed and sell it). When I bought it I did not know things like tipped in, but I do now and I believe it maybe tipped in because the page color is different. But then again I have seen tip in by printers the same way. It is a beautiful signature. The American (STATED First Printing) copy of The Guns of August is a newly acquired book, bought just a few weeks ago. It is unsigned but while flipping thru it(I do this with every book to look for family treasures like $$$$, which I have found many times), I ran across the Post Card. Oh but not just any Post Card but one made for Barbara Tuchman. It is addressed in her handwriting and has a personal message and signed in her hand.
