The Natural.

Malamud, Bernard

New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1952. First edition of the author's first book, and one of the greatest baseball novels of all time. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Bernard Malamud and Robert Redford on the half-title page. Redford played the character of Roy Hobbs in the 1984 film adaptation. Variety called the film "impeccably made ... fable about success and failure in America." James Berardinelli praised The Natural as "[a]rguably the best baseball movie ever made". Sports writer Bill Simmons has argued, "Any 'Best Sports Movies' list that doesn't feature either Hoosiers or The Natural as the No. 1 pick shouldn't even count." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Rare and desirable signed by both Malamud and Redford. "Malamud has done something which—now that he has done it!—looks as if we have been waiting for it all our lives. He has really raised the whole passion and craziness and fanaticism of baseball as a popular spectacle to its ordained place in mythology" (Alfred Kazin). It was the basis for the 1984 film bearing the same name directed by Barry Levinson and starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, and Robert Duvall.

MALAMUD, Bernard

New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1952. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Spine a little faded, near fine in the gray binding (one of three, with no priority) in a very near fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with a couple of tiny tears and nominal rubbing. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "For Charles Crow. Cordially Bern. July 1952." Crow was a friend of Malamud's from New York, and advised Malamud when he applied for teaching positions, eventually accepting a position at Oregon State College. Crow's advice to Malamud is quoted in Bernard Malamud: A Writer's Life by Philip Maurice Davis. An especially nice copy of the author's first book, perhaps the classic baseball novel, and basis for the Barry Levinson film featuring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, and Kim Basinger.

The Natural

Malamud, Bernard

New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First edition. His first novel. A contemporary (dated 1952) signed and inscribed presentation copy. Fine in red cloth, one of 3 colors with no priority. The dustjacket has a 1/4" tear, and a crease to the rear flap, else the jacket's also fine. Specifically, The Natural is a baseball novel set in the 1930s, but it's really a Gothic novel taken out into the sunshine and set between the chalk lines. Its primary theme is the tragic flaw, while its minor themes touch a succession of juxtapositions including, choices and consequences, morality and responsibility, and rise and fall. Woven through the plotline is a symbolic myth of initiation and isolation, drawing from models of lore as distant as Chrétien de Troyes' Sir Percival (the original Arthurian quest for the Holy Grail), and as near as T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, and so it is a knight's tale of betrayal, lost virtue, redemption, and extinction, a chilling read, that's dark, deep, leveled, literate, mythological, supernatural, and profound. Generally, it's a reminder that novels are a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of secret charm, and of thought in cold storage, a small object that fills an immensity. Novels are, no less than, the history of everything that didn't happen (Book Code).

An excellent copy. Near Fine unclipped, bright jacket - minor crinkling to spine ends and the upper portion of rear panel, touch of spine fading. Fine red cloth book with minor bumping to spine ends and tiny dent to top edge. ********** Inscribed and dated in the month of publication (July, 1952) on the front free endpaper. This copy for his high school English teacher, the poet Florence Ripley Mastin, whose classes he described as unusually exciting. This book remained with her estate since she received it from Malamud. An important provenance involving a person uniquely influential in the author's writing development. And as you know, this book was the basis for the 1984 Robert Redford movie of the same name. ******For even better pricing, visit our website at http://annirocbooks.wixsite.com/anniroc**********

Malamud, Bernard

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1952. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good. A Near Fine copy of the book in gray cloth (no priority established among the three cloth colors), with sunning along board edges. Dust jacket Very Good or better, with a few short tears on the front panel, wear at the spine ends and corners, but presenting well. In 1949, a woman shot a famous baseball player, Eddie Waitkus; a mysterious event that gripped the imagination of the press. This incident served as the inspiration for Bernard Malamud's first novel, "The Natural," published in 1952. In the book, Roy Hobbs becomes the target for a woman's morbid fascination leading to a shooting which derails Hobbs' young baseball career. Malamud details the inner turmoil of Hobbs' attempts to return to baseball. Heralded as one of the finest American contemporary writers of the twentieth century (The New York Times), Malamud continued writing novels and garnering awards until his death in 1986. "The Natural" was famously adapted into a film starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger and Robert Duvall. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket.

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1963. First British Edition. Hardcover. 248 pages; This First British Edition includes an afterword and glossary by Malamud not present in the earlier American edition. Original owner's inscription on ffep, otherwise clean and tight in original blue boards with lettering in silver and image of a baseball in red at spine. Wonderful pictorial dustjacket is about Fine with a small crease near base of spine. McCue, page 66. Shannon 100. Inscribed on ffep from Bill Kintos to Harry Broley dated "Sept., 1963 / Lagos, Nigeria". The inscription quotes Thomas Browne (from Religio Medici, Section 15): "We carry with us the wonders, we seek without us: There is all Africa, and her prodigies in us" In the mid-1970s, C. William ("Bill") Kintos was with the State Department's policy planning staff and serving as special representative for President Ford as chairman of the Sinai Support Mission and the Inter-Agency Management Board. The board consisted of representatives the Departments of State and Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Agency for lnternational Developement, and the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and is located in the State Department. In September 1963 when this book was inscribed (just a month before Nigeria proclaimed itself the Federal Republic of Nigeria), Kintos was likely working in Africa for the State Department or some other U.S. Agency or contractor. It was a very unsettled time in Nigeria. Clarence H. "Harry" Broley was an urban planner who worked for Arthur D. Little Inc., and later had his own consulting business, specialising in transportation, urban infrastructure and communications. After graduating from high school, Broley was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds organization, but World War II cut his baseball career short. He enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific as a pilot and worked in Naval Intelligence. Broley led projects on revitalizing the downtown areas of decaying cities in Nigeria, Australia, Saudi Arabia and the United States. While working for Arthur D. Little, Inc. in the 1950s, Broley became friends with Moe Berg, the baseball player turned spy who worked for the OSS during World War II and occasionally for the CIA until the early 1950s. Sharing a love of baseball and used book stores, Broley and Berg often went to Red Sox games and visited Cambridge bookstores together. Broley was working on a baseball project for the city of Buffalo and hired Berg to assist him. They saw each other frequently over the course of the three year project. Interestingly, many of the baseball scenes the 1984 film based on this novel were filmed in Buffalo at New York's War Memorial Stadium. .
