The Satanic Verses Paperback - 2008
by Salman Rushdie
A hijacked jetliner explodes above the English Channel. Through the falling debris, Gibreel Farishta, the biggest star in India, and Saladin Chamcha, an expatriate, plummet from the sky, and proceed through a series of metamorphoses, dreams, and revelations.
About this book
An intense explosion wreaks havoc on the airplane as two strangers, Gibreel Farishta and Saladin Chamcha, cling to a hope of survival among the screams. As the two solitary survivors fall, they are bombarded with biblical visions of contradicting natures and twisted endings. Gibreel is transformed into the Angel Gabriel and Saladin into the Devil. Upon landing on the ground, Saladin is quickly taken into custody by law enforcement, is fired from his job, and finds out his wife is cheating on him. In parallel, Gibreel’s life seems to be filled with opportunity and glory as he is reunited with his lost love and gains a reputation in his field. Overcome with resentment for the other man, Saladin vows vengeance on Gibreel; however, we quickly learn that Good and Evil are simply a balancing act intertwined in an individual's story.
Summary
Reader reviews for The Satanic Verses
Review summary
Reviewers admired Rushdie’s exuberant, satirical prose and the novel’s wide-ranging treatment of migration, identity, and faith, but many struggled with its density, dreamscapes, and digressive structure. Several said it demands background knowledge or annotation—especially of South Asian pop culture and Islamic history—and found it time-consuming; a number did not finish. Some readers found it bold, moving, and funny; others reported boredom or indifference and judged it uneven. The controversy is acknowledged, yet many conclude it is less an attack on religion than an ambitious, difficult meditation on displacement and belief.
