Reader reviews for The Autobiography of a Mountain Man, 1805-1889

From the publisher

The Autobiography of a Mountain Man, 1805-1889 is a memoir written by Stephen Hall Meek, a legendary figure in the American West during the 19th century. The book chronicles Meek's life from his birth in Virginia in 1805 to his death in Oregon in 1889. Meek was a trapper, explorer, guide, and Indian fighter, and his adventures took him all over the western United States.Meek's story is one of survival, perseverance, and determination. He describes his early years as a trapper and his encounters with various Native American tribes, including the Blackfoot, Crow, and Nez Perce. Meek was also involved in the fur trade and worked for various companies, including the Hudson's Bay Company and the American Fur Company.Meek's most famous adventure was his role as a guide for the Donner Party, a group of pioneers who became stranded in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter of 1846-47. Meek's knowledge of the terrain and his ability to hunt and trap helped the survivors of the Donner Party to stay alive.Throughout the book, Meek provides a firsthand account of life in the American West during the 19th century. He describes the landscape, the wildlife, and the people he encountered, including famous figures such as Kit Carson, John C. Fremont, and Brigham Young. The Autobiography of a Mountain Man, 1805-1889 is a fascinating look at a bygone era in American history. Meek's story is one of adventure, danger, and survival, and his firsthand account provides a unique perspective on life in the American West during the 19th century. This is a new release of the original 1948 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
