The European Capital of Culture year RUHR 2010 broadly addressed the question of the role of culture as both a driver and a product of societal transformation processes. The Folkwang University of the Arts not only participated in the Capital of Culture year with various artistic productions, but also created a space for reflection on the conditions that govern cultural activity in the Ruhr region. The interdisciplinary symposium, the proceedings of which are compiled in this volume, was based on the preliminary theoretical framework of a "transcultural" constitution of people in late modernity. In addition to contributions from musicology, there are those from art history, social and contemporary history, sociology, and various art education disciplines. The symposium also fostered dialogue between academics and artists from different disciplines, who were invited to present their perspectives on the central question using their respective means of expression.
