Contemporary cloth, spine with gilt device and year, leather spine-label, original printed wrappers bound in, 12mo,. xxiii, 454, [2] pp. 841 lots. An interesting catalogue, with prefaces by Alphonse Pauly and Anatole Claudin which paid tribute to Rochebilière's bibliographic skills, noting that he would buy multiple copies of books and minutely examine them "C'est ainsi qu'il a pu indiquer neuf états différents de la première édition française des Maximes de La Rochefoucauld, portant tous la date de 1665.". "Nous ne craignons pas de dire que cette vente fera sensation parmi les bibliophiles." Rochebilière had been head of the Bibliothèque Saint-Geneviève in Paris. The catalogue cover highlighted: Montaigne, Saint François de Sales, Corneille, Descartes, Pascal, La Fontaine, Bossuet, Molière, Racine, La Rochefoucauld, Boileau, Fénelon Malebranche, La Bruyère, Regnard, Bourdaloue, Mme de Sévigné, Le Sage, Montesquieu, Vauvenargues, etc; Quelques Romantiques. Covers a little rubbed, spine-label worn, prelims and endpapers browned, contents somewhat age-toned and with light duststaining to some margins, otherwise Good.
