Description:
Strahan & Co. Publishers, London, 1871. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first collected edition. 12mo. Original green cloth with bevelled edges, the spine and upper boards gilt lettered and decorated, with blind-stamped decorations to the rear boards. All edges gilt. The cloth lightly marked in places, with some bruising to the spine ends. A touch of light very occasional spotting. The binding of volume eight cracked and splitting at the front hinge and most gatherings quite tender as a result. The half title and title page of volume six detached and laid-in, and five further volumes exhibit some tenderness to the front hinges and one a short tear to the upper gutter. A nice bright set, somewhat marred by the aforementioned binding issues, but really very crisp internally. The first collected edition of the author's complete and vastly influential fantasy output, comprising 'Within and Without' and 'A Hidden Life' (volume one), 'Poems', 'The Gospel…

Description:
This version of The Tales of Chekhov featuring the famous story "The Lady with the Dog" is extremely rare. The original story was published in 1899 and there was an English translation as early as 1903, but this version was among the first Chekhov translations by the famous Russian-to-English translator Constance Garnett. The book is ex-library, but from a retirement community library with few readers--although it is stamped on the endpapers and title page. Two previous owners inscribed the front endpaper in ink: "Gordon Steward Crawford, July 19, 1933" and "Raymond Cunningham, March 18, 1940"

1877 Japanese Woodblock Samurai History Nihon Gaishi Tokugawa Shogunate 22v RAREAn interesting Edo woodblock-print of 'Nihon Gaishi,' a 19th-century book on the history of Japan by Rai San'yo, a confucianist philosopher, historian, and poet of the Edo era. This edition was edited by Jiro Yorimata, the original author's second son The whole work of 'Nihon Gaishi' was the first comprehensive study of samurai history, covering Japanese history, from the emergence of the Minamoto clan and the Genpei War, through to the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu in the Edo era. His history was later banned in several provinces because it encouraged strengthening the authority of the emperor and was a major influence on the Sonnō jōi movement, a movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate during the Bakumatsu period. It became part of the private studies of Chinese people in meiji Japan and in their curricula became one of the most read history books from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era. (Mehl)

Description:
1834 Handwritten Mathematics Manuscript WINE & BEER Apothecary Drugs Stocks An interesting handwritten manuscript of mathematics lessons, theories, and problems. The lessons cover mathematical concepts such as subtraction, proportion, multiplication, and division, including an interesting section entitled 'The Rule of Three'. The lessons are then applied in a variety of practical questions, such as converting measurements between apothecary, troy, and avoirdupois weights and measures; understanding billing, expenses, and cost of services rendered; use of currency; brokerage of stocks; and many more. These practical questions often feature goods and services students would frequently interact with on a daily basis during this time period, such as the cost of ingredients for wine and beer; understanding how many garments could be made from a given length of cloth; travel distances over time; and cost of tobacco, to name just a few.

1848 1ed Pieter Harting Microscope DUTCH Biology DARWIN Influence Illustrated 3vPieter Harting was 19th-century Dutch scientist who is best remembered for his contributions to the development and use of the microscope and microscopy. He published what proved to be the greatest book on microscopy, titled simple 'The Microscope', which provided lessons on using the microscope as well as covering designs for lens improvements.
It should be noted that Harting was one of the earliest supporters of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories, many of which were endorsed by Harting's microscope findings. In fact, according to Darwin scholar Eve-Marie Engels, Harting was "one of the most influential" of all 19th-century scientists and philosophers.
This 1848 Dutch edition of 'The Microscope' is illustrated with 18 impressive folding engravings featuring numerous figures depicting microscope parts, lenses, cells, burners, and scalpels.
