About This Item
Tight spine, with only a very subtle curve. Interior is clean and unmarked except for a former owner name to the first blank leaf and a couple scattered instances of highlighting. Only minor shelf-wear to the cover, including some toning. There are two lines of red permanent marker taken to the edges. According to Elias Canetti, a crowd can become its own kind of organism, a beast whose individual components magnetically cluster around what he calls 'crowd crystals'. So what exactly were the crystals at the core of the frenzy that happened at an Ursuline convent in 17th-century France? Religious hysteria? Sexual repression? Demonic possession? Cultic fervor? This movie tie-in edition of Huxley's classic telling of these events includes B&W stills from Ken Russell's much-censored film, which enlisted a young Derek Jarman as production designer. 'I always viewed The Devils as my one political film,' said Russell. 'To me it was about brainwashing, about the state taking over.' Includes index. Bibliography: pp. 359-360. 374 pp.
