About This Item

In Düsseldorf: Arnz & Co. Good with no dust jacket. 1852. Presumed First Edition. Hardcover. Note: LACKS 5 Plates - see details further on. ALL TEXT in GERMAN. In very dark blue/green cloth-covered boards with blind-stamped decoration and bright gilt titling to the front board only. Spine has come off at some point and has been completely reglued, and corners bumped with scraped tips. Head and tail of spine chipped with a little loss to the cloth. Internally, (apart from light foxing patches all over pages here and there, some pages worse than others, as usual with these volumes) generally clean and tight, but does LACK 5 plates - Nos: 29, 33, 35 40 & 41. The pagination is rather odd but all text/illustrations seem complete, some pages are numbered - others with woodcut illustrations are not - but I have been through it page by page and think I am correct. No Inscriptions or other marks. 192 pp. Numerous Full, half and smaller page b/w woodcut illustrations, and 43 (of 48) full page b/w Lithographs, most on light tan or dark beige backgrounds. Scarce in this original form. 'Düsseldorfer Monathefte' was a German satirical magazine which was published between 1847 and 1861 when the magazine ceased publication. This is a bound volume for the year 1856. Many well known Düsseldorf artists illustrated the magazine and other famous artists of the day participated - The inspiration for the magazine was the Parisian satirical journal 'Le Charivari'. No other political satire magazine in Prussia achieved such artistic excellence. Full of Wonderfully drawn caricatures/satirical drawings of topics of the time - Cholera; Soldiers; War; Culture; Medicine; Theft; Money, Education; Poverty, etc, etc - anything that could be satirized - was! . Apart from lacking 5 plates this is quite a reasonable copy of a scarce item, though not quite as good condition as Volume 9. At the time of listing I also have Volume 9 (1856 - lacking 8 plates ) in this series, please enquire if interested in both. Please note this book weighs well over the Kilo and MAY require extra postage depending upon your location. See Images. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .
