About This Item
London: Adam and Charles Black, 1957. First edition of Barton's best-known work. Quarto, bound in full morocco by Asprey with gilt titles and raised gilt bands to the spine, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated with 76 pages of drawings by David Sarvis including tissue-guarded frontispiece in color. In fine condition. An excellent example. After receiving her master's degree from New York University in 1943, Lucy Barton worked as a theater instructor at the University of Texas at Austin, and later became the head of the drama department at the University of Alabama. Her best-known work, Historic Costume for the Stage served as one of the earliest and most definitive American textbooks on the subject.
