"Kansas City established its first public hospital in 1870 on a hill just outside the 20th Street city limit to care for victims of diseases, and to tend to the needs of poor or transient patients. Today a major metropolitan healthcare complex stands on that same hill. Its institutions still care for patients and still guard the public health.
