About This Item

From the back cover: "Since 1839, when it served as a river landing for the town of Westport, Kansas City has suffered disastrous floods, fires, tornadoes, and epidemics of cholera, smallpox, scarlet fever, dysentery, typhus, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, malaria, influenza, diphtheria, polio and AIDS."
"Kansas City established its first public hospital in 1870 on a hill just outside the 20th Street city limit to care for victims of diseases, and to tend to the needs of poor or transient patients. Today a major metropolitan healthcare complex stands on that same hill. Its institutions still care for patients and still guard the public health. In addition, they train doctors, dentists, nurses and other healthcare professionals."
