Garden City, NY: Doubleday and Company, 1980. First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated by Brock Cole. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Andrew - Best wishes, Lynne Reid Banks Dorset, UK Sept. 2008." Additionally signed by the illustrator Brock Cole on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket illustration by Robert Sabin. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed by both Banks and Cole. The Indian in the Cupboard was originally published in 1980, and it was immediately rated "the best novel of the year" then "best children's book of the year" by The New York Times. Its enduring status as a classic is confirmed by its use within the teaching curricula for children's reading. The story is of a young man who a present that will change his life: a plastic miniature Indian that magically comes to life inside a mysterious old cupboard. Magic is not a feature of the plot solely but an effect to inspire children readers. Indeed, Publisher Weekly praised it as "Skyhigh fantasy that will enthrall readers."

Synopsis

The Indian in the Cupboard is a children's book written by British author Lynne Reid Banks, and illustrated by Brock Colein 1980. It has received numerous awards, and was made into a film in 1995. The book was followed by four sequels: The Return of the Indian (1985), The Secret of the Indian (1989), The Mystery of the Cupboard (1992), and The Key to the Indian (1998). All were published by Doubleday Books in hardcover, then by Avon Books, now HarperCollins, in paperback.
