Octavo (21cm); full black cloth, with printed title label mounted to upper spine; black topstain; unpaged; chiefly illus. Slight forward lean, modest external wear, with a bit of sunning to spine label, and an early gift inscription to front endpaper; a solidly Very Good copy, lacking the dustjacket. Ward's second wordless novel, consisting of 118 wood engravings telling the story of a family's slave trading past and the following generation's quest for scientific knowledge (See David A. Berona's Wordless Books: The Original Graphic Novels, p.52-57).
