Octavo, 6 volumes, bound in full brown calf, gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, raised bands, red and black morocco spine labels, all edges gilt, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. Edited by Sir Edgerton Brydges. Illustratations by J.M.W. Turner. In near fine condition. English poet and polemicist John Milton was active during a time of religious flux and political upheaval and became best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost written in blank verse. Writing in English, Latin, Greek, and Italian, he achieved international renown during his lifetime and introduced many new words to the English language. In his 1796 biography, William Hayley referred to him as the "greatest English author", and he remains generally regarded "as one of the preeminent writers in the English language.

Text block very slightly age-toned and foxed; scattered damp staining and scattered small stains. Archival repairs to several pages and plates. Small open tear to title page of Paradise Regain'd. A few words lacking from final leaf due to archival repair. Title pages for Samson Agonistes and "Notes on Milton's Paradise Lost" are lacking.
