About This Item

New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc.. Very Good+ in Near Fine dust jacket. 1967. First Edition; First Printing. Cloth Spine. A sharp first edition/first printing in Very Good+ condition, prior owner's stamp to front free end paper, minor damp staining to rear end paper in nearly Fine, lightly tanned dust-jacket; From 1967, his second novel, a story of Clinton Shartelle, the best political campaign manager in the US who is persuaded by the narrator, Peter Upshaw, to run the campaign for Chief Sunday Akomolo, running for the premiership of an African colony soon to achieve independence. The results are grotesque, humorous and violent. Upshaw meets and fall in love with Peace Corps worker Anne Kidd, and Shartell is smitten by the ravishing "Widow Claude" Duquesne, a delicious Creole. As usual, Thomas, who won the Edgar Award for his first book, "The Cold War Swap", writes an exciting and suspenseful story, full of wild but wise humor. ; 8vo; [8], 9-318, [2] pages .
