About This Item

Austin: Texas Folklore Society, 1943. Limited Edition. Octavo. 73 pages, limited to 700 copies and the type melted. Illustrated by Tom Lea with designs by Carle Hertzog and an introduction by James Emmit McCauley. One of the most authentic accounts of the hard life of the cowboy in the 1880's and 1890's. Jim McCauley was a tenant farmer's son who replied to a bully with a knife through the ribs, forcing him to leave home as a fifteen-year old becoming a horse wrangler who despise having virtually no education, wrote in simple English his experiences from breaking bronchs at $5.00 a head, to surviving an Apache attack, he called his Colt 45 man's best friend, but led a very hard life cowboying in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. He wrote a song which in 1910 he offered to John A. Lomax who encouraged him to get his story down on paper. This work has become a classic for those who want to grasp the tough realities of working cowboys. Bound in gold cloth stamped in brown depicting a saddle, spine lettering brown, in nearly fine dust jacket. A very nice copy. [6-Guns #138; Herd #1373].
