About This Item

London: Humphrey Millford, Oxford University Press,. Good with no dust jacket. 1932. Presumed First UK Edition. Hardcover. One of a series of Tippenny-Tuppenny Books for children. All Miniature books sized 7cm x 6.5cm (c. 2.8" x 2.5") . Highly destinctive original pictorial covers in primary colours of green, yellow, blue, orange and white, featuring a little girl and a Teddy Bear on the front, a blackboard and golliwog on the back and a toy rabbit on the spine - titled in white, with paper over thick card cut flush, front and back, but just paper over the spine area which is given to wrinkling due to being just stuck directly onto the gathers. The spine is a bit wrinkled/rubbed, but all titling/illustration clear. Front and rear boards are a little 'curved' outwards. A few 'rust' marks to the page fore-edges. Internally there are b/w Illustrations of toys inside the front/rear covers/endpapers, and a list of titles in the Tippenny-Tuppenny series (24 listed) opposite the title page. NO date shown on this title but I suspect these miniatures were published in small batches as 'Cheep-Cheep and Peep Peep' was published in 1931, and this book is only 6 tiltles away, I would date this as 1932/33 at the latest. No pagination (but circa 44 thick pages). Numerous b/w cute illustrations throughout the book but not 'signed'. Some illustrations/Alphabet Letters have been coloured in by a child. There are splits between the 3 gathers but the book is tight and clean otherwise, with NO Inscriptions or other marks. A charming example of an early child's 20th Century Miniature book. A more unusual rhyming alphabet with the alphabet letters used in an unusual way not the standard A is for Apple, B is for Boat, etc, but = 'B' is for Birthday; 'I' is for Iron Mummy uses at night..." etc. Overall a Good only copy, but scarce . See Images ; The Tippenny-Tuppenny Books; Miniature Less than 3" tall .
