About This Item
Madison: Wisconsin House Ltd, 1970. Hardcover. Small 4to. Red cloth with silver spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. 308pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Near fine/very good. Jacket a bit edgeworn and rubbed, with a few tiny edge chips. Tight and attractive first edition of this university history by the prolific and versatile Wisconsin writer and historian. One of the largest chapters ("With Leaves of Laurel") is devoted to UW athletics, and this unique copy has been turned into a mini-UW Athletics Hall of Fame shrine, bearing seven choice autograph additions. Seven fine, matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards each boldly signed by a UW-Madison football star and Hall of Fame inductee are neatly tipped to the front flyleaf (recto and verso) and half-title page. In order: JIM BAKKEN (b. 1940; S. Louis Cardinals punter/placekicker 1962-78) signs in black ballpoint, dating it 26 October 1972 at upper right; KENNETH HUXHOLD (b. 1921; Philadelphia Eagles guard 1954-58) signs in blue fineline, adding "Philadelphia Eagles / 1954-1958" below and dating it 16 June 1979 at upper right; RICK REICHARDT (b. 1943; California Angels and other teams outfielder 1964-74) signs in blue ballpoint; PAT RICHTER (b. 1941; Washington Redskins end/receiver 1963-70) signs in black fineline, adding "U. of Wisconsin '63" below and dating it 6 December 1974 at upper right; RON VANDER KELEN (1939-2016; Minnesota Vikings 1963-67) signs in blue ballpoint, dating it 5 January 1974 at upper right; STU VOIGT (b. 1941; Minnesota Vikings tight end 1970-80) signs in purple fineline, dating it 3 October 1977 at upper right; and BOB "RED" WILSON (1929-2014; Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians catcher 1951-60) signs in blue ballpoint, dating it 5 May 1973 at upper right. Superb copy for the Wisconsin Badgers aficionado. Laid in are all seven original transmittal envelopes -- the perfect bookmarks!
