About This Item

London. Paris. New York.: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd.. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1930. 1st Thus. Hardcover. The Water Babies (Abridged) With "Come To Life" Panorama. Illustrated by Mabel Lucie Attwell; Molly Benatar & ? . London. Paris. New York. ; Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd. ; c.1930; 1st Thus Sm. Chunky 4to 8"-10" tall; Hardcover; Good+ with no dust jacket; Undated but 1930s. Original red cloth-backed spine with black titling, & pictorial paper-covered boards. The Front cover illustrated in full colour by Molly Benatar. Very Small Chunky Quarto = 9" tall. Boards slightly dust-soiled with age, edge-worn in places with some heavier wear/paper loss to the four corners, tinted to match & does look better. The red cloth has faded slightly, with some 'waving' of the cloth, but the black titling is still deep & clear. The Publisher's device on the back cover= Tuck's 'The Storyland Treasury' series. The page fore-edges are lightly toned with age & have a few light inoffensive spots (pale foxing). Internally there is an old gift inscription in faded ink to the top of the front pastedown- dated 1933. The "This Book Belongs To" page has been neatly filled in by the former owner in pencil. The title page & first few pages have some pale foxing, & there is the odd spot here & there occasionally in the book. 6 of the b/w illustrations in the text have been neatly coloured in by the former owner, but overall the book is clean. (vi) + (viii) + 9 -152 pp + 8 pp publishers' catalogue at rear. A full colour frontispiece by Mabel Lucie Attwell & one other full page plate by her in the book. An unattributed double page, double stand-up, colour pop-up in the centre, & numerous charming black & white illustrations throughout the text also by M. L. A . (Mabel Lucie Attwell). There were apparently 8 'Come to Life' Pop-up 'Panorama' Gift Books in this series- all following the same format. At the time of listing I have one other for sale - Robinson Crusoe. An odd format culled from other 'Tuck' publications, probably to create gift books for children, but the pop-up is in excellent condition, and the Mabel Lucie Attwell illustrations throughout are as delightful as ever. A Scarce Raphael Tuck Title. See Images. ; The Storyland Treasury; Small Chunky 4to 8" - 10" tall .

Synopsis

The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby is a children's novel by the Reverend Charles Kingsley. Written in 1862-1863 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. The book was extremely popular during its day, and was a mainstay of children's literature through the 1920s,  but eventually fell out of favor in part due to its prejudices against Irish, Jews, Catholics, blacks, Americans, and the poor. In the style of Victorian-era novels, The Water-Babies is a didactic moral fable about a young chimney sweep, Tom, who falls into a river and becomes a 'water-baby,' guided by moral teachers through lessons and adventures, eventually earning the right to become human again and being united with an upper-class girl Ellie who had also become a 'water-baby.'
