Fine. Unframed painting of Everett Ruess by artist Fred Calleri. Oil on canvas. Painting measures 18 x 24 inches. Titled “E. Ruess” on the painting with Calleri’s signature and date “2011” in the left corner. The artist titled the painting “Southwest Mystery” although this is not noted on the painting itself. This painting was originally commissioned by Northern Arizona’s Mountain Living Magazine, where Calleri worked, for an article in the October 2011 issue. It ended up not being used in the magazine. Fine condition. Everett Ruess, poet and artist, went off to explore the deserts of southern Utah in the early 1930s. He disappeared in November, 1934. This painting depicts Everett with his two burros and his notebook in hand, walking in the desert. The artist of this painting, Fred Calleri, has artwork in at least six galleries in the United States and has been featured in many Southwestern magazines. .

Brown paper boards have beige paper labels with black lettering affixed to spines. Both volumes have significant chipping and shelf wear with boards exposed on edges; cracking along joints; some soiling and staining. Both have the remaining material on spines held on with tape. Volume 2 has a crack in the fore-edge of the front board. Some cracking to page gutters, but both volumes still have tight bindings. Interiors have minor foxing. Very Good. Collotype 20 x 16 inches. Titled and copyrighted in the negative. Photo was likely taken circa 1915. This collotype is somewhat dark or underexposed and is quite beautiful. Collotype has brittle edges with minor chipping along the top and bottom right corners, else very good. The Library of Congress holds the same photographic print and is dated to around 1915. The photo print depicts a Navajo man, seated on the floor by a fire, shaping silver. William Jefferson Carpenter (1861-1925) was active as a photographer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries focusing on landscape and mining scenes and Native American life. Mautz states that he was active in Fort Lewis, CO circa 1885, Telluride and Silverton, CO in 1889, Philipsburg, MT in 1890 and Rossland, BC circa 1897 (Mautz). .
