Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1928. 327pp. Original publisher's indigo cloth boards lettered in gilt, with the unclipped illustrated dustwrapper. Fore and bottom edges uncut, spine a little cocked, with some further bumping. Wrapper shows losses to all panels, and light soiling. Internally a little toned but still clear. Inscribed on the front free endpaper from the author to Henry Williamson 'To my dear old Henry from his friend J. D. Beresford, Swanage May 1928'. J. D. Beresford was an English journalist, dramatist and novelist. Though he is credited with writing the first critical study of H. G. Wells, he himself is now most remembered for his early science fiction and horror writings. His daughter Elisabeth was also an author, best remembered now as the creator of The Wombles. . St. Andrews: Joseph Cook, [s.d., 1839 [4], 286pp. With half-title. A handsome copy in contemporary calf, gilt. Slight wear at head of spine, a little rubbed to extremities. A rare privately printed collection of romantic verse by Wedderburn Dundas, eldest son of General Francis Dundas (1759-1824), who had served under Cornwallis in the American Wars of Independence. Largely Scottish in outlook, and focusing especially St. Andrews (including 'Lines suggested by the view of the ruins of the cathedral of st. andrews'), other pieces included relate to the Napoleonic Wars and, perhaps most interestingly, 'The white man's grave'. With a lengthy preliminary note on 'the Indian wars in North America, consequent on the settlement of that country', it describes, in remarkably romantic terms, the landscape of a grave dug following a Tomahawk massacre. Marbled endpapers, small neat paper repair to verso of title (slight loss to imprint), very occasional chipping to margins. The complete run of Portuguese poet Jose Daniel Rodrigues da Costa's (1757-1832) monthly periodical of prose and poetry commenting upon contemporary manners and morals. Within each issue the setting for the diverting anecdotes varies from public spaces, private residences, places of worship, and in one instance a gaol. A prolific writer, da Costa's narrative poem O balao dos habitantes da lua (1819) is considered the first Portuguese work of science fiction. . First edition. Quarto.

Internally clean and crisp. A remarkable survival in the original wrappers of an illustrated collection of four anonymous stories for the 'chickabiddy generation'. Nurse Dandlem narrates to the children of her school the adventure of Wake Wilful, an unlikeable young Yorkshire sailor marooned on an island inhabited by a terrible three-headed giant. In addition to the titular story, the book contains three further morality tales: 'The history of a good boy', 'The history of a bad boy', and 'Duty of good children'. . 16mo.

The auction catalogue, priced in a contemporary uniform hand, of the ten-day sale, commencing 20th July, 1864, of the extensive library of satirical and miscellaneous writer George Daniel (1789-1864). In all the sale realised (with the prints, pictures, and porcelain) a total of £15,865, of which the books accounted for over £14,000. The sixth day, allocated to his editions of Shakespeare, commanded great interest. Daniel's First Folio (purchased by him for £100) sold to the Baroness Burdett-Coutts for £716 2s. . 8vo.
