Description:
1909. (RACKHAM, Arthur, illus.) LA MOTTE-FOUQUE, Friedrich, Baron de. UNDINE. Adapted from the German by W. L. Courtney, and illustrated by Arthur Rackham. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1909. First American edition. Illustrated with 15 tipped-in color plates, with captioned tissue guards, and head- and tail-pieces. Large octavo. viii,136 pp. Publisher's binding: Green cloth spine decoratively titled in gilt, green paper boards flecked with yellow, pictorially stamped in dark green on top board, illustrated endpapers, top-edge stained. One leaf (C5) has a small nick at fore-edge, else internally clean, with fine plates. Binding shows light edge rubbing and a bit of wear fore-corners. The dust-jacket is heavy, pale grey-green paper titled and decorated in gilt in the same fashion as the book. It soiled all over and darkened on spine, with shallow edge-chipping, and an imperceptible closed tear on front panel. A very good copy in a good - and rarely seen - dust-jacket.

Description:
1808. LACROIX, Col. Irenee Amelot de. MILITARY AND POLITICAL HINTS By Colonel Irenee Amelot de LaCroix, humbly submitted to the Hon. Members of Congress, and the General Officers of the militia of the United States. Digested and Translated by Samuel MacKay, late Professor of French Literature at Williams College, To Which is added The Artillerist, translated by the Same. Boston, Etheridge and Bliss, 1808. 8vo. 121[i]54pp +[2]pp. ads. First American edition, same year as first English. In spite of Col. LaCroix' "attachment to the laws" of the USA, and having found there "the summum bonum of all earthly enjoyment, Liberty" he is very blunt about his scorn for her defences. "I cannot observe, unconcerned, your half-way measures, at the moment which calls for all your energies." "The loud voice of enthusiasm," and "patriotic ardor" will not suffice. He offers a detailed analysis of her "Navy, Fortifications, and Militia" with recommendations for their improvement, with exact geography. As to the militia,…
