London: Gray Walls Press, 1945. Poor. 8vo.. FIRST THUS, SIGNED BY AUTHOR to half title: 'Herbert Read/ 21. iii. 52'. 8vo, pp. [138] + colour plates: sadly, defective a previous owner has excised four plates, including the frontis. Grey cloth with gilt lettering interspersed with green circles to spine. Spine slightly cocked, wear to heel, bruising to top corners. POI to ffep, contents lightly shaken. Else, clean and bright. Though defective, scarce with Read's signature. New edition of Read's only novel, originally published in 1935 by Heinemann, and here fittingly paired with Felix Kelly's gently surreal illustrations. Written when he lived in Hampstead amidst the 'nest of gentle artists' (including Henry Moore) and in the same year as his extended 'Appreciation' of the sculptor appeared, the novel testifies to the critic's broad set of theoretical influences, particularly the psychoanalytic mysticism of Carl Jung. As well as designing dust jackets for authors such as Naomi Jacob and… Read More

Green cloth lettered and ornately (and theatrically) decorated in gilt to spine and upper board. All edges gilt. Dark green endpapers. Slight lean and sunning to spine, bruising and gentle wear to extremities, a little scuffed, bump to bottom board. Front and rear foxed, pencil POI to half-title, else, clean, tight and bright. A very good copy of the attractive Thomson-illustrated edition of Reade's popular novel. During her short life, Margaret Woffington (1720-1760) dominated the Georgian Dublin and London stages in comic and cross-dressed roles, with her breeches part as Sir Henry Wilder causing a storm at the Theatre Royal, Dury Lane.
