Good. 1953 Everest mountaineer George Band's own copy, good plus in green cloth with gilt titles and vignette to upper cover, spine creased with short tear to the cloth along the joint. An ex WH Smith library copy, foxing to the edges and extremities but internally fresh. Well illustrated by the author with photographs and attractive line drawings. From the collection of English mountaineer George Band, the youngest member of the team which successfully conquered Mount Everest in 1953. Band was President of the Mountaineering Club at Queen's College, Cambridge and his exceptional Alpine record caught the eye of John Hunt, who put him in charge of radio equipment on the expedition. Band's finest achievement was the first ascent of Kangchenjunga in 1955. He pursued a professional career in oil exploration but continued to climb and published several books on mountaineering. He was made an OBE in 2009. Good 1949

We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's journal for a time and exhibiting widely as well as lecturing at home and abroad. 1948. No Binding. Good. An original manuscript for an article submitted to Biotechnic and Histochemistry for publication in 1948 of 'The Staining of Radulae'. The manuscript which is in the hand of the biologist and taxonomist Bernard Verdcourt runs to six foolscap pages and has a few corrections although this appears to be a fair copy intended for the typist - Verdcourt instructs his typist to use double spacing and provide two copies. There is a tear to the first page but otherwise the manuscript is in good condition. This forms part of a large collection of natural historical and geological pamphlets recently acquired by Modernfirsteditions. Good 1948

Near fine in blue cloth, in a very good dust jacket, rubbed to edges and a tiny hole to lower panel. Laid in: a letter [1tls] from the author to Frederick Adams thanking him for a Christmas gift. This book comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R.. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to France explains the presence of his books in the United Kingdom. Near Fine 1946

London: Unpublished, 1916. First World War Visitors Book recording Royal visits to the women munitions workers in the factories built on Park Royal, west London. Small quarto, expensively bound in pebbled black morocco with gilt lettering and decoration; rounded spine. Inner dentelles over rich grey marbled endpapers; all edges gilt. Card leaves held on linen stubs. All in near fine condition. King George V visited the munitions factory late in 1916, signing himself 'Nov: 28th 1916. George R.[ex] I.[mperator]' - king and emperor. The future Edward VIII visited towards the end of the war with his mother Queen Mary. At the top of the page she wrote: 'Mary. March 14th 1918.' Below her is written 'Edward P.[rince of Wales]' and ditto marks so he didn't have to bother writing the date himself. The book is in two parts, the first 'Among the Elephants' recounts her solitary camp in the Maasai Game Reserve on the border of Tanganyika in 1928-29. Part II 'The Mountain' is a record of her two month stay at Urumandi Hut on Mount Kenya. Bound in tan cloth with gilt spine lettering, the end papers show maps of Kenya, charming colour frontispiece by Beryl Ash and photographs taken by the author. Very good, the cloth is clean, front gutter cracked but the binding is firm, light spotting to the text throughout. Inscribed to the half title "For Hedwige - this handful of elephants for your entertainment - with love from Vivienne". Very Good 1935
