Original gelatin silver prints (uniformly 122 × 165 mm, but three have been trimmed a little), all captioned in ink on the verso (four are dated 1905). All prints are unmounted as produced; two have a short tear to one edge, one of these (and one other) have a small piece missing from one or two corners; one is a little creased; two are a little marked; overall, the condition is excellent. Quarto; cloth lightly rubbed; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper a little mottled and slightly creased and torn. 'Dr Yates describes how the tapestries arose out of Catherine de' Medici's marvellous series of festivals at the court of the Valois in the sixteenth century which were intended to bring together hostile religious factions in an attempt at 'politique' conciliation. The festivals were, however, constantly interrupted by renewd outbreaks of the French wars of religion; indeed, the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew began during a festival'.
