Small 6" x 8" photo album which belonged to the Ulysses Grant IV, whose name is written on the inside cover. There are seventeen photos in this album which dates from 1905 to 1907. Photos are from both Alaska and California, with identified places including Juneau, Sweet Water Dam, Aloha and one photo which appears to be taken on a train and is captioned "On the way to Portland, Mt. Shasta in the background, 1905." This is an identified photo of Grant with his dog in the album, and other names mentioned include Isabel, Marie, Dudy and Mut. Photos are various sizes and all are identified. Several pages are unused, otherwise it is in good condition. Ulysses S. Grant IV (May 23, 1893 - March 11, 1977) was the son of Ulysses S Grant, Jr. and the grandson of General of the Army and President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant and United States Senator Jerome B. Chaffee of Colorado. He was an American geologist and paleontologist known for his work on the fossil mollusks of the California Pacific Coast.

1927-1929 photo album with about 150 photos measuring between 1.75" x 2.75" to about 3.5" x 4.75." The beginning of the album shows "Exemplars of 1927," which appear to show professors in classrooms. Later on, there are photos from the First Annual Fiesta at Santa Ana Junior College, which I believe are from the same school. There are many names in the album, including Maurice Rayburn at a desk, the Rayburn Family in Little Rock, Arkansas, Thomas Hall Glenn, Neal Harlow, Ed Danielson, etc, but the album seems to follow an unidentified couple from their dating life to their honeymoon in Arizona. There are about 25 photos from the Huntington Estate, including the Japanese Garden, the library and art gallery from 1929. This archive is an amusing and ambitious, social activities record for a group of twenty-something friends in the San Mateo area of California. The group apparently ironically modeled themselves after the popular OPTIMIST MOVEMENT of the time. Large heavy blank-page leatherette album - 11" x 15". 36 oblong pages filled with photos, club "minutes", charters laid-in etc. About 100 labelled glued-down b&w snapshots. Hundreds of typed laid-in notes, memories, observations. A few photos are missing and but pages are separating from binder hinge. Original club members include: MANFRED ANDERSON, HOWARD KEMPER, JOHN WEISEL, BOB BERGMAN, VINAL PETERSON, MAYNARD CHARLES HENKER, LEN TAYLOR. Loose leaf notebook with 22 photos inside of Penny Arcades, 5 & 10 Stores and three souvenir photos from a ship, the SS Lurline, two from a trip from Honolulu to San Francisco. Written in black marker on the front cover is "Dad 1940s - 1960s." A few places are identified and include Los Angeles, Long Beach and Venice Pier. Photos are both snapshots and larger, professional images. It appears that "Dad" worked the arcade booths and 5&10 stores. One page is cute in half and loose, and one other photo is missing.

10.25" x 13.25" black string-bound album with "Photographs" in gold on the cover and a decorative underline. There is a sticker label affixed to the cover which reads: "Canada and White Mts. 1937." The album is full of 42 large black and white photos depicting locations visited in Canada during a trip. Photographs measure 5 x 7" and are both horizontal and vertical and are held to the pages with corner tabs, two photos to a page. Each photo includes captions written on the border of the photo. The photos feature gorgeous landscapes and locations include North Hero, Vermont, Dufferin Terrace in Quebec, the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Montmorency Falls, the St. Lawrence River, the Saguenay River, the beach at Tadoussac, Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, the Emerald Pool, the Silver Cascade and Glen Ellis Falls at Pinkham Notch, and Echo Lake-Franconia Notch in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. 6" x 9" broadside advertising the Famous Canadian Woman Suffrage Leader, Mrs. Flora MacDonald Dennison, with Mr. Frank Dunham and Liberty Loan Speaker, Rev. Dr. J. Ellenwood at the Final Suffrage Mass Meeting, on October 25 (1917) at the Common council Chamber, presided over by Mayor E. J. Foley, of Watervliet, NY. The flyer was printed by the Century Printer company of Watervliet. Light edge wear/chips, and some small stains.

Suede leather wraparound cover, embossed with "Casper, Wyo." in Gothic text, with color illustrations of a Native Chief and an oil derrick, also embossed. The back cover is thin and loose, with small chunks missing; the leading edge of the front cover is no longer attached to the cloth lining of the inner cover. Wonderfully evocative of the carefree '20s, the photos feature young adults in full jazz-age regalia - men in tailored suits and caps, women in flapper dresses and cloches - frolicking in various landscapes: mountain hikes, lakeside romps, hunting trips, country drives. The front cover actually serves as a pocket with a snap button closure; inside the pocket is an envelope which appears to be addressed to "Miss K. B. Arnett" that is packed full of negatives. The rest of the album houses around 170 black and white photos from 1916-1921 which largely feature a cat, local landscape and houses, including the Orchard House, Curtis House, Hop Brook, Atton's cornfield, and Shaker Pond. The exact location of these photographs is not exactly known, but appears to be the New England coast. Photographs measure between 1.75 x 2.5" and 6.25 x 4.5" and are glued to the pages. Stuffed full, this 8 x 11.5" green string-bound scrapbook contains ephemera from the career of Helen Donovan, a cellist. The first page of the album reads: "Professional Scrapbook No. I Years - 1932-1934" although in fact the material within the scrapbook goes to 1935. Helen was a professional cellist and the scrapbook is filled with letters and programs for concerts and musical programs that she participated in. Many of these programs were for the Boston University Women's Council "Six Plays for Children." Aside from concert programs, there are also a couple of newspaper clippings and letters thanking Helen for her participation in musical programs. 11 1/2" x 15 7/8" handmade bagatelle pinball game, circa 1920s. The background is hand drawn and colored with crayons or colored pencils. Images are of various characters. Score and other labels are written in Arabic. The score holes/hammocks and the obstructions are made of nails. The game is encased in glass and framed with wood that has been painted with red crackle paint. The slope which is essential for the game is on a hinge made of metal. Charming vintage homemade game!

This 11" x 7" album of humorous newspaper clippings (mostly "The Laugh Line" and "Sap and Salt") was gifted to Frank Hurley from a Miss Lorna Reeder on August 8, 1922. The newspaper clippings are interspersed with delightful little pen & ink sketches of characters. Sketches include a reenactment of Frank getting his picture taken, a man lying in bed dreaming of a moonlit canoe trip, and "assorted nuts". 8 leaves/ 16 pages; 24 total newspaper outtakes. This collection of silly facsimile was likely used to entertain Frank Hurley while in hospital. Quotes herein include: "Each session o' Congress seems to be the limit but the next session proves that it wasn't", 'The church is burning down' 'Holy smoke!', "When there is only one way out, take that way, no matter how much to hurts". 7.5" x 10.5" loose-leaf photo album with over 100 photos and two postcards. One the first page is some tree bark with a drawing of some tents, and "Kappa Ki Kamp, June 10-19, 1915." One photo shows a group of women at Miss Jobelle Holcomb's house with a Chi Omega banner hanging from the balcony. Next to that photo is a newspaper clipping about the "Members of the Chi Omega Fraternity at the University of Arkansas during the 1916-1917 term." Photos after this, mix family photos with photos of college girls. There are also some pics of a trip to Pike's Peak in Colorado and the two postcards are from Honey Grove, Texas One page is loose, otherwise the album is in good overall condition.

There are more than 140 items of schoolwork from the 1950s, of a young boy named Glenn Wenzel of Imler, Pennsylvania. The collections includes many drawings, collages, leaf rubbings, humorous reports, workbooks, spelling and math tests, etc. One photo of the young fella shows that he is in Elementary School. There are some religious workbooks, along with typical McCormick-Mathers Publishing workbooks for "Growing Up with Math." There are other hand-made scrapbooks and one sketchbook containing multiple pieces. Some of the pages have edge wear and creasing, but this is quite a nice collection of school work and art from one child.

A collection of seventeen photos, that begin in 1937 and show a child named Mary Ellen Bartlett who was about 3.5 years old, and has severe deformities, perhaps from burns. The photos show her age after apparently having had different surgeries, with skin grafts. The images range in size from 3.5" x 5" to diptychs which measure 5" x 7." One photo has her name written on the back, while some of the others have her initials and sometimes the date. The photos of her as an adult are undated, but appear to be from the 1950s. A few of the photos have creases or edge wear. A fascinating look at the life of someone who survived a life altering event.

A series of photos showing children popping balloons, by Charlie Miller (C.E. Miller). There are 8" x 10 photos and contact sheets, mostly from 1972. Also included is a sign in sheet for parents of children that were photographed and a page of handwritten details about one of the children. There are also three larger photos, one of which is inscribed to (Harold) Doc Edgerton. Both men were instructors at MIT in Boston. Two of the the 11" x 14" color photos appear to be dye transfer prints and show some wear.

12.25 x 14.75" dark brown photo album with gold decoration and border framing on the front cover. Loose within the album are homework items, artwork and clippings from Robert Slepicka's time as a student at Spry School in Chicago. There are several handwritten pages from around 1951 to 1962 of Slepicka practicing writing in print and in cursive, spelling quizzes, and math problems. There are also copies of clippings which feature Slepicka in pictures, giving or receiving awards. Slepicka was part of the Boy's Club and seems to have participated in a few science fairs, as he has several honorable mention ribbons related to his presentations. After graduating from Spry Upper Grade Center in 1962, Slepicka seems to have gone on to Harrison High School, as he has an honorable citation mention for his entry in the science fair there in 1963.
