Description:
Publisher's red cloth, ruled and decorated in blind, with gilt spine and upper board lettering, octavo, pp. 448. First edition; second impression. Fore-edge and bottom-edge pages uncut. Front hinge just beginning to show tenderness. GOOD with shelf and handling wear. See BAL 7149. Also, regarding this novel in his biography of Harris (Athens, 1987), R. Bruce Bickley, Jr., writes "Harris's dialect portraits in Gabriel Tolliver are brilliant, but the real strength of his Reconstruction tale lies in his depiction of the restlessness, uneasiness, and strange silence pervasive among the blacks who are trying to come to grips with their new freedom after the war (141)."

Description:
Removed from a bound volume, octavo, pp. 28. Scuffing along spine, and a dull old vertical crease (as though folded long ago for insertion into a jacket pocket?) but GOOD condition and done-up skillfully by printer Smith. Of interest here is the listing of noted theologian Enoch Pond as Professor of Ecclesiastical History. Also of note are John Sawyer, Eliphalet Gillet, and Kiah Bayley among the Trustees. These three and several others were instrumental in the founding of the Seminary, which was initially the Maine Charity School. Indeed, the manuscript charter document (in Massachusetts State Archives) is in the hand of Reverend Bayley. Uncommon in trade or institutional holdings, with a 2023 OCLC search returning American Antiquarian Society and Library Company of Philadelphia only. Protected in a clear display sleeve with white card-stock backing-board. See Williamson, Bibliography State of Maine, Volume 1, Number 595.

Description:
Removed from a bound volume with scuffing at spine and binding cord exposed, octavo, pp. 36. A one inch vertical tear with no loss from top edge of title page downward, near spine. A small hole, also near spine, exists about two inches up from bottom edge. About GOOD condition, withal, and please see images for our best attempts at close-ups of these two faults. The General Catalogue occupies the first page through page 25, where there is a Summary. The Annual Catalogue runs from pp. 26-36. Noteworthy in the General Catalogue is the inclusion on the Trustee list of John Sawyer, Kiah Bayley (misspelled here as "Baily"); Eliphalet Gillet; and William Jenks, all instrumental in the founding of the Seminary, originally known as the Maine Charity School. Reverend Bayley wrote the actual charter, in fact, and his manuscript document resides in the Massachusetts State Archive. Also of note is Professor of Ecclesiastical History, Reverend Enoch Pond. An uncommon item, both in trade and institutional holdings,…
