The narrative is rife with killings: from self defense, to contract killing, the gunning down of sheriffs and deputies, and finally the execution of three by the electric chair. The evangelist author ties up the story nicely with deathbed confessions and clearly listed morals detailing the wrongness of killing, revenge, and temptation, and the healing hand of Jesus. Part true crime novel, part moralizing tale, the account oddly includes a future segregationist presidential candidate Strom Thurmond as the presiding judge and former adulterous lover of one of the condemned.
