Description:
Paris: Bossange Freres, 1825. [4], xv, [1], 558pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled calf, marbled edges. A trifle rubbed. Marbled endpapers, internally clean and crisp. The first edition of a critical commentary of the effectiveness of Napoleon's forces during the Russian Campaign. The author, Gaspard, Baron Gourgaud (1783-1852), though enrolled among the royal guards of King Louis XVIII of France in the summer of 1814, embraced the cause of Napoleon during the Hundred Days (1815), was named general and aide-de-camp by the emperor, and fought at Waterloo. After the second abdication of the emperor (June 22, 1815), Gourgaud retired with him to Rochefort. Determined to share Napoleon's exile, he sailed with him on H.M.S. Northumberland to St. Helena. In 1840 he joined other survivors of the captivity who returned to St. Helena to retrieve Napoleon's remains for burial in Paris. . First edition. 8vo.

Description:
London: Printed for Thomas Boys, 1822. xv, [3], 256pp. With a half-title. Uncut in original publisher's drab paper boards, printed paper lettering-piece to spine. Rubbed, joints starting, loss to spine, lettering-piece chipped, corners bumped. Very occasional light spotting. The first edition, in original unsophisticated state, of Bernard Barton's (1784-1849) fifth volume of poetry. The titular poem, at 118 Spenserian stanzas, is by far Barton's longest. Highly influenced by the author's Quakerism, the poem is more a commentary on Christian pacifism than it is a reflection of the character of the French Emperor - to the extent that the Literary Speculum (June, 1822), in their rather dismissive review, suggested it could well have been entitled 'Julius Caesar', 'Alexander', or 'Tamerlane'. Jackson p.483.. First edition. 8vo.

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1933. 64pp. Original publisher's green cloth boards lettered in navy, with the unclipped cream dustwrapper printed in black. Wrapper a little marked and scuffed. With an ink inscription to Henry Williamson from the author dated July 25th 1934. Teresa Hooley (1888-1973) was a prolific female poet working predominantly from 1920 to the middle of the 20th century. Falling out of fashion in her later years, she is best remembered for her First World War Poem 'A War Film', which first appeared in Songs of All Seasons (London, 1927). Henry Williamson (1895-1977), novelist and writer on natural history and the English countryside, is predominantly remembered as the author of Tarka the Otter (1927) for which he won the Hawthornden Prize. His wartime experiences on the Western Front having altered his life inexorably, he spent the remainder of his post-war life in Devon, Norfolk and Suffolk, writing naturalistic novels very much in the romantic tradition. .
