Description:
[circa 1860s]. Pencil on wove paper, 8" x 12" (sheet size). A lovely sketch of a large tree curling over a shed, with a farm at center and a suggestion of trees, fields and hills to the left. Xanthus Smith (1839-1929) was born and raised in suburban Philadelphia. All of his immediate family relations were accomplished painters. Instruction from his mother, noted floral painter Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith, and father, the celebrated landscape artist Russell Smith, supplanted institutional instruction in his youthful artistic development. Critics of the day often compared his technique to his father's, though their subject matter often differed considerably (Xanthus' fame rests on his seascapes and Civil War naval battle scenes). This strong parental influence also shaped the career of his sister Mary, who became an acclaimed painter of small barnyard animals in her adult life. All of the Smiths exhibited their work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This drawing is from a small archive of Smith… Read More

London: Arnold Hatfield, 1603. Folio, early full calf, raised bands. [viii], 1363, [1 blank p.], [62] pp., engraved title-page headpiece. In a recent custom-made clamshell box, in half brown calf and brown cloth, with raised bands. First edition in English of Plutarch's Moralia. However, further translations into other languages took the title… Read More
