An early edition of the collected meditations of Dominican theologian Luis de Granada (1504-1588). The early English owner Richard Banastre who has so boldly inscribed this copy was perhaps a member of the Lancashire Banastres of Brotherton. Not in Adams.. 12mo.

Marbled endpapers, scattered foxing. The first octavo edition of Anthony Trollope's (1815-1882) novel following the eponymous protagonist, a spendthrift youth who runs into debt. Initially published as a supplement to St. Paul's Magazine in monthly numbers from January 1870 to July 1871. In April 1871, it then was published in three volumes by Hurst and Blackett. . Marbled endpapers, initial gathering foxed and toned, else internally clean and crisp. The first edition of a discerning verse translation by Jabez Hughes (1684/5-1731) of Latin poet Claudian's (c.370-c.404) influential unfinished mythological epic De raptu Proserpinae, to which is subjoined the tale of Erichto extracted from the sixth book of Marcus Annaeus Lucanus' (39-65 AD) Pharsalia. A second edition, corrected and enlarged with notes, appeared in 1723. Loss to over-wraps, some rounding to edges and occasional soiling of text block. John William Fletcher (bap. 1729, d.1785), Anglican clergyman and Methodist writer. Fletcher and his wife, Mary Bosanquet Fletcher, were friends of John and Charles Wesley. One of the earliest theologians of the Methodist movement, he was chosen by John Wesley to be successor, had he not predeceased the latter. A Rational Vindication, a defence of traditional Trinitian orthodoxy, was published posthumously after completion by Joseph Benson. Imprints exist at both London and Hull; both are rare. An early example of commercial Parliamentary lobbying literature, published in small numbers for distribution to Members of Parliament in order to influence opinion in the run up to debates and divisions, highlighting, in eleven clear points, the commercial situation for the wool trade in Worcester, lamenting the failures of the Worcester Clothiers Company, then appealing to Parliament for financial assistance. It is made clear that rival clothiers in Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Wiltshire have remained profitable and sought to export their wares abroad, particularly to Turkey, at which the Worcester trade has failed. The first edition in French of this milestone in the study of the digestive processes of man and animals, originally published in Germany as Die Verdauug nach Versuchen (1826). The authors, Friedrich Tiedeman (1781-1861) and Leopold Gmelin (1748-1804), expand their earlier work on the subject into a comprehensive and highly influential study, employing chemical operations and microscopic experimentation to determine the significance of organs and bodily fluids in the digestive process.
