Description:
London: Printed for Baldwin, Cradock and Joy...and N. Hailes, 1821. [2], 159pp, [1]. With an engraved frontispiece. Original publisher's black roan-backed marbled paper boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Rubbed. Light offsetting to title, very occasional spotting. An unsophisticated copy of the first edition of children’s writer Jeffreys Taylor’s (1792-1853) conduct of life tale in which the eponymous proto-Scrooge, having happened across a concealed gold coin whilst walking one night, is driven to distraction by the possibility of yet more hidden wealth. The miser is further encouraged by the sudden appearance of a ghostly apparition who, in portentous tones, appears to confirm his suspicions that a great treasure is within reach. Richards, with some misadventure, soon locates a buried vault brimming with riches and, somewhat unusually for a children’s tale, is able to purloin each and every valuable item without consequence. Hull: Printed By George Prince, in Scale-Lane, and sold at the New Chapel, City-Road, London, [c.1790]. 223pp, [1]. Uncut, in early roughly-sewn wrappers over original blue-paper wraps. Loss to over-wraps, some rounding to edges and occasional soiling of text block. John William Fletcher (bap. 1729, d.1785), Anglican clergyman and Methodist writer. Fletcher and his wife, Mary Bosanquet Fletcher, were friends of John and Charles Wesley. One of the earliest theologians of the Methodist movement, he was chosen by John Wesley to be successor, had he not predeceased the latter. A Rational Vindication, a defence of traditional Trinitian orthodoxy, was published posthumously after completion by Joseph Benson. Imprints exist at both London and Hull; both are rare. ESTC records only three locations holding this provincial printing in the UK (Birmingham, BL, Dr. William's Library) and four in North America (Perkins School of Theology, Texas, Union Theological Seminary and Washington & Lee University).… Read More

Description:
[London?]: [s.n.], [1740?] Single bifolium. 3pp, [1]. Docket title to verso of second leaf. A trifle creased. An early example of commercial Parliamentary lobbying literature, published in small numbers for distribution to Members of Parliament in order to influence opinion in the run up to debates and divisions, highlighting, in eleven clear points, the commercial situation for the wool trade in Worcester, lamenting the failures of the Worcester Clothiers Company, then appealing to Parliament for financial assistance. It is made clear that rival clothiers in Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Wiltshire have remained profitable and sought to export their wares abroad, particularly to Turkey, at which the Worcester trade has failed. ESTC records a single copy in North America (Harvard), and none elsewhere. ESTC N63563..

The authors, Friedrich Tiedeman (1781-1861) and Leopold Gmelin (1748-1804), expand their earlier work on the subject into a comprehensive and highly influential study, employing chemical operations and microscopic experimentation to determine the significance of organs and bodily fluids in the digestive process. Their achievements included determining the importance of stomach acids and the discovery of glucose. . First edition in French. 8vo.
