The book comes with its original glassine dust jacket. The book is very good considering its age with a gift inscription dated November 1885 to the title page and occasional spotting to the pages. The delicate glassine jacket whilst very good is a little dusty and has a split running 11cm up the spine and 3.5 cm tear along the rear joint extending up from the foot of the spine. There is also minor loss to the spine tips. A relatively scarce Caldecott book with a scarce dust jacket. Top edge gilt, peach and white silhouette endpapers, 287[1]pp with 12 full page colour illustrations each with a captioned tissue guard and 59 black and white line drawings by Arthur Rackham as called for. In original dust jacket with publisher's name at the foot of the spine and in original publisher's box with a picture echoing the front of the book on the top of the lid and another with titles on the bottom edge. VG+/VG-. 1st Edition, 1st impression 13.5 x 20.4 cm dark blue boards with silver stamped titles to the spine and authors facsimile signature stamped in silver to the front board. 191 (1) pp, signed, inscribed and dated by the author to the front free endpaper. 'To dear Dr. 'T, / With all my love,/ Lucy./ 25th September, 1961.' [from the library of Dr R.N. Ticehurst]. Boards are clean and bright with a hint of pushing to the top fore edge corner on the front board and a little light wear along the top edge. Internally the book is clean with a hint of uniform toning to the pages and a few tiny ink dots to the top and fore edges of the text block. These items are difficult to date but it is pre 1940 and the images suggest it is earlier rather than later. A really lovely example with only a little patchy toning the covers. The binding is firm although the staples are a little rusted as would be expected in a book of this age but there is only a hint of rubbing to the spine tips. This book is in much better condition than is usually found and looks hardly read. An excellent and early and scarce addition to any Ladybird collection. Sewn binding iv, 31pp(1), (6) publisher's adverts with 16 hand coloured images including frontispiece and title page vignette, as called for. Very good plus book with light toning/marking mainly to the edges, a little rounding to the corners, with slight surface loss at the bottom fore edge corner of the front cover, and rubbing to the foot of the spine. Internally there is a Christmas gift inscription dated 1891 on the inside of the front cover but otherwise the book is clean and bright. All in all a very nice copy of this Leadenhall Press Series of Forgotten Picture Books for Children. Unpaginated 48pp with illustrations by Ardizzone throughout 24 in colour. The book has its original unclipped jacket with a price sticker of 90p /18s net overlying another and is now protected in a removable clear jacket (not shown). The author has signed and dated the book on the front free endpaper. The boards are bright clean and unfaded with light rubbing to the top and bottom edges. Internally there are a couple of light marks to the bottom margins of three pages but otherwise the book is clean and bright. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut, 252[2]pp with woodcuts by Eric Ravilious throughout. The book was produced in a limited edition of 100 which were signed by the author. This is an unnumbered, signed, presentation copy. Some toning to the spine and and the edges of the rear board. There is a little shelf wear and a hint of pushing to the bottom corners. Internally there is uniform toning to both free endpapers but otherwise the book is very clean with only very light dust making to the uncut edges. Brown coated endpapers, [viii]318[2]pp with 6 colour illustrations by W H C Groome. There is slight rubbing to the corners and spine tips with a small split in the cloth at both the head and foot of less than 0.5 cm. There is some loss of shine on the red colour to the front and to a greater extent the back cover. Signed and inscribed by Searle to his friend Wilfred Hanchant curator of the Wisbech Museum, "Wlifred/ with Happy Christmas Wishes/ Ronald/1960". Clean boards with bright titles and decoration. Dark brown endpapers. [ii] 429[1]pp with engraved frontispiece and title pages for both books and retaining the four volume division of the original edition. The boards are very good with just a little rubbing to the spine tips and corners and edges. The gilt decoration and titles on the spine being only lightly rubbed. Internally the endpapers are cracked front and back and the binding is a little shaken. There are two previous owners' names inscribed on the recto of the frontispiece and very light handling marks only. [Gilson E28] An ex-library book this has the remains of a label on the spine, a presentation note on the front paste down indicating that the book was presented to the Warren Public Library by Mrs George D Hastings of New York City. There is also a Warren Public Library stamp dated 1876 on the first page of Sense and Sensibility. The boards have a little marking but are generally in very good condition noting only the label on the spine and a 1.5 cm split on the upper joint at the head of the spine. Pocket Classics reprints, 11 x17.5 cm full red leather with gilt stamped titles within a floral boarder to the front and titles and gilt decoration to the spine and all have a gilt top edge. The novels are all printed on india paper and have 40 black and white illustrations by Hugh Thomson with the exception of Pride and Prejudice which is illustrated by Charles E Brock. All also have a silk ribbon book mark. A lovely little set with just a little very light pushing to some corners and a hint of rubbing to the head of the spine of Northanger Abbey which also has a slightly mottled appearance to the boards in a certain light. All edges speckled red, 288pp. [Gilson E49] A firm binding with rubbing to the spine tips, edges and corners. Internally there is a book plate for William Charles Plenderleath on the front pastedown, a small inscription on the front free endpaper and a blacked out name on the top of the front free endpaper, the black colouring is also visible to a lesser extent on the blank following.
