By 1961 the Publisher knew well in advance it was going to be picked up by so many Book Clubs and had a great notion it would be on a shortlist for the Pulitzer. Because Edwin was a regular at the Atlantic Monthly and has a new novel and he had tackled a tough subject: DEATH of a loved one. This book has so many First Editions, about 20? After a True First of a First(which could be 1 of 2 of those) either the Little Brown stated First Edition or the Presentation Copy of the Little Brown stated First Edition(I may still have one). I have one that someone pushed off as a 1st by trying to hide the square on the back by loosening the cloth around it. These others can be just as nice, so pick a nice-looking one and don't fret about this winner. You can usually get a real one of 2 for cheap but they tend to be battered or have No DJ, with sun-faded spines and top edges, so condition is the question here. GREY CLOTH WITH GOLD LETTERING. first edition but it is Book Club, but makes a nice Gap Filler. previous owners name in ink 1st leaf, book has minor fade to edges. DJ has minor fade to spine and rubbing shelf wear. It is a nice GAP FILLER till you can find that $350 1st.

THERE IS NO LITTLE INDENTURE ON THE BACK COVER BOTTOM SPINE AREA. Stated First Edition, price-clipped but TEOS is still there(for those that don't know that is the 1st letter of each word of the title). Gray cloth with gold lettering and I added a grayish-black bar across the top to hide a faded area that looked like sunshine, and it does not look professional but is better. The spine ends are bruised but not bumped. There is a small smudge on the bottom page ends. Otherwise, there is not a mark or stain, very tight and square. The Dustjacket has very minor chipping on the spine ends and light shelf wear along the edges. Now in Brodart for protection. It is hard to find a decent copy of this book that is not a Book Club with its minor blemishes it had to be saved.

Very cheaply made covers but appear to have a very good spine in the bindery. I bought this to go with Elizabeth Bishop's other books for this collection.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1926. This is a 7th printing with red cloth covers and gold lettering,front hinge is cracked all the way showing the webbing,inside front cover has a bookplate of the original owner(same name as author inscribed to),1st leaf has a name and 1927, and then below that another non author inscription long one dated spring 1976.The author has done an inscription on the 1st title page "For,______,with the best wishes,of,Louis Bromfield. Its his handwriting and signature(I have 2 other examples personally). The book has a sunned spine(medium) with the titles still very readable,minor rubbing and fraying beginning at the spine ends,but still a very presentable copy of a hard to find signed directly Pulitzer Winner.. Included is a letter send to Louis Bromfield asking for his signature by Alfred Kaiser and Louis doing so,the author signature is below the fold and boldly inscribed and signed. Now about the book: it is a Second Printing before Publication nine days before the offical release date in Oct,1926. A 1st Printing is also known as an Advanced Reading Copy,2nd Printing is the 1st trade edition,the 3rd was released Nov 3rd 1926. Green Cloth covers with gold lettering same as the ARC. This one has minor wear at the spine ends with light soiling,spine ends are begining to show signs of fraying.sight toning to the inside covers,and front 1st leaf beging to crack,former owners Rockwell bookplate inside front cover,1st leaf has Name Address Date of either an owner or giver of the book,otherwise this would be in the Near Fine range.Very tight and square,very presentable copy.. 1st Trade Edition. New York: Grosset Dunlap, 1932 Assume this is the 1st reissue by G&D, stained top edge REDish, no mention of printings(as seen on other entries) just the 1930 copyright date,but date this to 1932 because it was reissued because Pearl Buck won the Pulitzer for the Good Earth in 1932 and the dustjacket promotes this fact and only list that title before this one, by the author. This has the beautiful colored dj with 2 Chinese women sharing tea, only defect I see to the dj is that the spine area is sunned barely readable,very minor wear or tears or chipping,putting it in mylar to protect it. Book has a slight lean,minor shelfwear and bruising to the bottom spine area,brown leather?(dark),very light age tone to the end papers only,very tight and clean.. First Thus. Hardcover. better than Good+/Good+ DJ because of the spine sunned.

Boston: Atlantic, Little Brown, 1961 only damage to book is rear cover near the spine,maybe someone tried to cover up a BCE blindstamp,hard to make it out,but will assume it is BCE. Slight fading to the very edges of the gray cloth covers,spine very minor,very light soiling to page ends,one small stain bottom end pages,no a remainer mark,other wise it is unread tightness,and square. It has its orginal dj which was unprotected and has slight rubbing and edgewear, the 2nd DJ was protected with older Mylar and is more FINE than NF(it came from a Presentation copy that was badly damaged,tossed the book kept the dj),would look better in new mylar,but I usually sell em as I find them,no doctoring by me.. Stated First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/2 DJs,one VG Other NF .better than VG+ as listed. Included is the 1st leaf from The Last Hurrah which was signed by the Author.Any signature by Edwin is SCARCE

This book comes in many different stated First Editions, I've seen 3. First Edition(1st to the trade), First Edition with Presentation Edition stated, And at least one Book Club Edition but they still have the indent on the rear cover at the bottom near the spine. This is one of the Book Clubs that someone has tried to conceal the indent and damaged the smoothness of the cloth. It does not look bad just darker over the indent. They went as far as to replace the BCE dustjacket with a priced one(there is value in the DJ as well). I spotted it in seconds but because the book was so good-looking, I kept it at a reduced rate. Over the years it has gained value because of its condition.There is bruising to the spine ends more at the top than the bottom, the pages have light age toning and on the bottom 5 small spots the same color as the covers. The DJ has shelf wear more at the top than the bottom and light soiling and rubbing.

Signed bookplate, non-fiction title by MC. Slight fade to the very edges like a halo(lol) or everything he touched turned to gold. UNREAD, tight, and clean. Near fine in case I missed something.

PLEASE SEE PHOTOS FOR DETAILS. The photos do not show Arrowsmith's top spine is pulled(weak) and bottom spine shelf worn, square enough to stand upright by themselves, pg 448 weak to the webbing. Elmer has red color pencil marks on the Other Novels page, spine ends also weak.
